Hi, i just adopted my first rat terrier (2 months old) , and i have read that they are very energetic and love to be with you.  Now my dog (sparky) likes to play but as soon as we stop if we dont play more he wants to lay down with us or be picked up.  Now is this normal, should i continue to pick him up or would i be spoiling him?  please help!!!

P.S. I bought him from a kennel,  not from a private breeder,   just in case this info helps

Welcome to you and Sparky. You'll love it here. I don't think you can pick up a rattie too much, personally. They love handling and attention. They definitely like to be with their humans if they don't have a four-legged companion to play with.

We have two now. Button in my avatar is 4 next month and we waited until she was 3 to get a playmate or her. Zipper, our rescue, is 1.5 y.o. and when I see them play together, I wonder why I waited so long to get Button a playmate!

Rattagan loves to play tug and fetch with his toys and sleep, but there's one other thing... treats!!!

Welcome to the site...we want to see pics of Sparky !!!!

Ratties are energetic but usually more than willing to just chill out with their owners when playtime is over. It's one of the many things that make them such a great breed.

So, while I think it is possible to "spoil" a dog...this isn't one of the ways. He just wants to be with you and do what you're doing, which is great!!!

Spoil your rattie all you want! Now, make him learn to behave and respond to commands - sit, come, stay, etc. But I once had a trainer that said the whole reason you wanted a dog was to spoil them and you can spoil a well-behaved dog to your hearts content! KS loves to be picked up -- hee hee, and she almost always gets her way when she asks (hmmm, demands) her loving time!

Oh definitely baby them. I think it's considered babying them when you coddle them around other dogs and don't allow them to play rough or be a dog. Lucy was rough and tumble from day one. She was 3 pounds and playing with 80 pound dogs.

I have 2 ratties my male loves to be loved on he loves when i hold him hes like a little child, when im sitting down my female will put her front paws on my knees and that is her way of telling me she wants to be held.

I think that i spoil them too. im always holding one or cuddling with one of them. I feel closer to them.

You can't ever love them too much Fuji thrives on the attention and loving. He plays with us and then spends most of the day cuddling with someone in the house. With 5 humans to cuddle with, he is never lacking attention

I got my Noodles just for this reason. I wanted a baby that would stay a baby forever. So when she wants up she gets up!!!! Spoiled, you bet and we like it that way. Howevrer PLEASE don't spoil her to the point that you get tired of it. If you pick her up all the time now, expect to pick her up all the time, all the time. So many people get puppies, kittens, birds, ect and in the begining they are so cute you always have time for them, then as the newness wears off you find that the things that need to be done need to be done now and you have less time to spend/hold your pet. How very sad this must be for them. Think of what you want your relationship to be later on and spoil accordingly! WOW sorry i just got on my soap box!! One of my major pet peeves, my house is so full of throw away pets that once were so loved then not so loved, and are now shareing all I can give.

There is no joy greater than being owned by a Rattie!!

I know Lloyd is spoiled...but I also KNOW he is still very much a puppy (at almost 11 months) & loves attention. He is my shadow--follows me everywhere & although he has the freedom to sit anywhere, across my lap is where you'll find him.My friends & family call him the love bug, because he wants to kiss on everyone & be rubbed by them.I say...it's far better than having a mean unpredictable pet.And to be honest, here in IN it has been "0" degrees out lately & he's been the toasty one keeping my feet warm at night!!That is his job & payback for being coddled...ha ha

From Rattagan's 11 year old point of view...shadow-yes, attention-yes, treats-definitely (all the time anytime), sitting beside-as much as he can, in bed under the covers-almost all the time, but he has pretty much free roam of the house, still, he'll almost always be found with his peoples. Late at night, when he is more than ready for bed, he'll sometimes sit in his recliner (used to be mine) and wait for us to get ready for bed. So it's not the age that is so important...it's just the way they are...Gotta love 'em...

PS, you see those spots appearing, you'll know them 'cause their little spoiled rotten ratty spots...

Spoiling is what ratties love best. I carry mine around like a little kid over my shoulder. He just loves to be carried and lays on my lap for his belly rubbing and followes me around. He is my own little shadow and then the sensation of the cold nose in the back of my knee happens all the time. A few times I have stopped short of where I was going and he has ran into my leg....very very funny.

Welcome to the site. Take lots of pictures because they grow up VERY FAST and post some for all of us to see.
