Hi Ya'll! Just rescued this little guy and not sure if he's a Rat or Jack-Rat? He has a docked (looks natural) tail, spots (ticking?) all over, and a Rat face. 11 pounds, 12" tall, 14" long. Just under a year.

From the neck down he sure looks like my friend's Jack Russel, but his face looks like so many on here?

And he's pretty laid back and quiet...totally unlike the Jacks I have met.

Whatcha think???? (Don't know how to put a pic in this subject thread???? Sorry!)

Thanks! Lady Di

Welcome!! You can post pics under the photo section. Can't say without a pic, but they can look very similar. By the measurements I would say he was a type B rattie if he is a rat. They are shorter than they are long, kind of like a russell. Congrats on your new pup!

Welcome to the group. Bless you for rescuing yet another rattie in need. I have two females: Button is four and Zipper, a kill shelter rescue, will be two in april. I'm gonna hold off on replying to your pups heritage until you can post a picture. Go to the Photos Forum, be sure your pics end in .jpg (must be small letters), resize them using photo software of MS Paint skew image feature and add them to your post.

Thanks to all!!! I am a recovering Apple -iMAC gurl attempting to learn Microsoft...GRRRRRRR! I did try to upload avatar and pics on pic Forum but says files are larger than 125. Not sure how to resize...wonder why it allowed the same pic on my profile?????
Oh well...am going home for Holidays and leaving computer behind, so will deal with the learning game later.

He IS a funny cute guy...whatever breed he is or isn't! I've always had Labs. Only concern I have now is my 10 yr old cat who thinks she IS a Lab. I don't trust him with her. But only had him 3 weeks.

Have a great Christmas-Holiday everyone! Lady Di

Hey guys! Wonder why the pic uploaded fine for profile but won't for avatar? And all my pics say JPG and I have tried every way to lower case it...does nothing. Durn!
So..he's perhaps a "Teddy" Rat??? He has no big spots anywhere on his body...just dapples-ticking.

Should I consider my cat always off-limits? I have heard and read that they will kill a cat...sometimes ones they were raised with.
That is my only concern with him. They will sit next to one another for treats...but for the most part she doesn't want to be around him..and he challenges her when she is...even after she swiped him he 'went for her" rather than submitting. I assume this is normal Terrier behavior of Feisty breeds?
Thanks all!!! GREAT site!

Well the cat information is disturbing.  Egypt spends hours chasing the cat (when I am not looking, because otherwise she is in a timeout for doing so) and pinning him down by the neck.  She has never hurt him and it seems like they are just playing.

He is so pretty looks like a ratty b. Our cat has fiannly accepted Opehlia and she is always ready to pounce on the cat. But she is a licker not a biter when playing with the cat.

Hey congrats on your new rescue, mine is named Yogi, too and I use the handle Yogismom on craigslist.

I think he could be either all ratty or have some jack in him, he's sure a cutie!

Many members on here have cats and ratties that get along fine.
I used to have 2 cats but my rescue dog (chi-corgi-rattie?) is a cat chaser. He got my whippet to chase and harass our cats and one had a seizure while being chased and died. We now have to keep the remaining cat separate from them BUT my two ratties just bark at the cat...don't hurt her.

Oh I missed the cat part. I have a cat and have taken to sleeping next to each other on the couch and bed. It totally depends on the individual dog and its prey drive. Yogi has very little prey drive, he once spotted a baby bunny at my parent's house in the country, he ran about ten feet, stopped about 5 feet away and watched it hop away. Sounds like your dog does have a higher prey drive, I would definitely keep them seperated for now when you can't watch but with training I think there's hope since they can sit by each other fine when you're giving them treats.

Thanks everyone! Yeppers...still thinking he's a Jack-Rat. But personality and calmness more Rat.

The cat thing is just because his "prey-drive" is very high...he charges at any movement...and I am just being cautious. For his sake as well as my kittie's. But now he can be playing and she'll walk past him (slowly) and he'll just watch her. That's a big change from his first days around her!!!

He is just such a cuddly dog...likes to push up next to me for his naps. Loves any dog he meets...and (whew!) he is not a yapper.

Can't imagine why someone threw the little guy away?!
Their loss. My gain.

Everyone have a wondrous Holiday season!

Thanks everyone!! Funny that there is ANOTHER "Yogi" on here! That was the name the rescue people gave him...and he responded so we kept it.

We survived the Holiday at my parents...he got along with everyone's dogs really well! LOVES to play...rough house!
BUT he did get out one day....and ran off...every time I got within 10 feet he'd look at me, and run. I FINALLY trapped him 3 blocks away! He knew exactly what he was doing.
So now I am really cautious. I guess these little dogs can't be trusted off a leash?Too bad because we live near the Beach.

Hope everyone had a great Christmas!!!! Lady Di (PS..he's also a picky eater...normal? I bought him a supplement as well as ALL natural food (Bison & Elk)

LABS were soooo easy! Hehheh! ;-)

Glad that most everything went well for Yogi over the holidays As for getting away from you, I'd really work on the "come" command with him. IMO most dogs should be kept on leash except under very controlled circumstances. Even a dog with great training has an occasional relapse or is set off by something and could bolt - you just have to make sure as much as you can that doesn't happen anywhere dangerous.
