I am getting a rat terrier puppy on the 23. He will be 53 days or 7 weeks old. I thought about taking a blanket or something to the breaders to put in with mom and the other puppies so our new baby will have something comforting on his first  few days with us. I can't wait!!!!!!! Any one have any suggestions or ideas on how to make a smoth transition.

I bought a blanket when I rescued Mocha, and my husband, current Rattie, and I slept with it for a couple of days, then I mailed it to her fostermom for her to have for her flight home. I think it is a great idea. I am not sure if it really did anything, but it made me feel better. Congrats on your new baby and we must must must see pictures soon!

I think you should get your scent on the blanket first and get it to the breeder. I didn't do that with Daisy, but we did it with Licorice and she did fine.

Welcome to the site and congRATs on your new pup!

Hi and welcome to the board. I just got my Molly at 6 weeks old this past Saturday and we went through a transition period over 2 weeks. We made a personal visit at which time my breeder gave my 2.5 year old Molly's blanket from her puppy kit for him to sleep with for the next few weeks until Molly was ready to come home. That was step one. The next thing that we did was the breeder purchased a pet taxi (I purchased LOL) that she used to separate Molly from the litter at night "only" for a week and a half before we picked her up.

From day one... we picked her up and she was great, at first she just wanted to sleep on my lap and when I put her in her crate she would cry, but I went get that blanket that my 2.5 year old had been sleeping with and I wrapped her in it and put her in her crate and that was the very last time that she ever "cried" in her crate. She has been home for 3 days now and she loves her crate and always sleeps with her blanket.

This has been the smoothest transition I have ever see or dealt with so there must be something to the sent in the blanket thing. The biggest thing that helped what for the breeder to start her in her pet taxi for  week an a half before we brought her home. Things have been just perfect and I would do it exactly like this again in a heartbeat...

Good luck and I can't wait until you have your baby home. Keep us posted as the time gets closer.

Oh I just thought I would add that we also play with Molly close to her crate/potty pad so that if she feel the erge to pee she can easily run to her potty pad if we are not fast enough to get her outside. This also keeps her familar with her surroundings so that she can easily find her way back to her potty pad or her crate for when she is just done with play time because at that time she just goes to bed in her crate on her own. Another plus for us!!

Thanks to all of you for your input. The breeder says the puppies are eating and would be ready to go next week. YIKES.! I am thinking of picking him up early but I have company coming for Thanksgiving and am afaraid this little guy will be overwhelmed, over loved on, overplayed with ect. I am also seeking input on chew toys after reading the post about the digested toothbrush! Any sugestions?

I got my baby!!!!!!! The breader called on Thursday and said he was eating great and driving him crazy, woul d I like to get him early! What a dumb question! This weekend has been just like Christmas. He is soooooo cute, and tiny. He can be so cuddly but then when he plays he is so fearless and brave. What a great little dog! I will write more in the week. Thanks for all the support!!!! By the way we named him Ernie, not one of 20 names on the list but it just fits!!!!!

Sorry I have been gone so long but my moniter wet down. Earnie has grown alot in the last week and is a hoot and a haf every secound he is awake! We got him at 6 weeks which seems a little early but he has done remarkably well. He is using his potty pads and eating puppy chow and the cat food when he can get it Yikes!!!
When he isn't sure of a thinf or a situation he streaches himself out as far as he can and thenwith his back legs on the floor and front leggs in front he sniffs or touches with is nose to make sure it's safe. He has even found his bark. Its so cute!!!! A real gggggrrrrfffy. I can down load some video from my camera as so as I figure out how.....? Dose anyone have any sugestions on seperation anxiety. This is becoming an issue!!!
Thanks Robin!!!!!

Dose anyone know where I can get a dog T-shirt personlized. I want to get Ernie one that says "I used to be a Dingo in my former life." He is so tiney but when he lays on his back and opens his jaws with his ears up he looks just like a deranged dingo!!!

Hello to all ! Just picked up my puppy, he's very young... almost 6 weeks old. My gf and I were very worried b/c he is so young but he is doing great. We have had him for four days now and and he is eating and adapting fine. We have and apartment so we did some research about litter training. The first night we tried it and made him somewhat of a doggie apartment consisting of a litter box, sleeping area, and eating area... to our amazement he did all of his business in box and has everyday since when we leave the house. When he's out and about he has a few pee accidents but thats part of the training i guess. I'm proud of him. We tossed around a couple of names and it came down to Dill or Q... I think we are leaning more towards Q. I will post some pics up soon of the little guy.

Why would you not?

Heres a pic of my new pup "Q"... I took him to visit my parents who have our family dog from growing up... Her name is Chloey and she is a Boxer/ Black Lab mix who weighs around 90lbs. Q was fearless at 6 wks old. Ran right up to her and started to wrestle and play fight. It's a good thing Chloey is a very gentle dog lol. Isn't he cute though?

Why would you not?
