Hello, I am trying to find any info on my Rat's problem. when he is getting sleepy, his head shakes back and forth. Not up and down, back and forth. It looks somewhat like a seizure. When he sleeps he jerks non stop. He has done this since he was a pup and he is now 6 years old. He is not distressed over this, but it concerns me that he is having seizures at night when he sleeps.

I took him to a internist today, and she is going to run several tests on him.

Does anyone know of anything in a Rat's breed that would cause this, or anyone have this happen to their Rat. Any information or advise would be very appreciated.

Thank you!

Jack had these "tremors" when he was a puppy. Sounds similar but he did it when awake too. We never figured out what it was and they went away on their own by 6-7 months of age. I hope you come up with an answer. Welcome to the site, we would love to see pics. Keep us posted on what you hear!

First of all, welcome to the site. You did the right thing letting your vet evaluate. I've not seen head only movement. I had a dachshund once with epilepsy, but she jerked all over, head and front & back legs in a very rythmical way. Her whole body quivered, in other words. Not just the head. Her seizures lasted about 6 minutes. Does your pup do this the entire time he's asleep, or just a few minutes and then is still again?
