My room mate and i just got a 6 week old Jack Rat terrier Hunter all he seems to do is want to sleep. Is this normal for a puppy i mean we have toys for him to play with but it just seems that he always wants to be held by one of us. What should i do to make him more active or is this just a stage of being a puppy? |

At 6 weeks old, yes---they will sleep much of the time. Just wait---when Hunter gets a little older, you'll be wondering if he EVER wears down! hahaha
Welcome aboard, by the way! |

To me, I think that is normal. Daisy when I got her, slept a lot too. But you are sure he is 6 weeks??? Most breeders sell them at seven-eight weeks of age....... But all of the puppies that I have gotten they did sleep a lot too!!!! Daisy did want to be held a lot ( The first 3 days were the most difficult on me because she would cry and cry and cry at night!!!!! . But I am sure that he is just trying to get comfy in his new home!!! Congrats on your pup! Be sure to add some pictures of him sometime!!! |

Completely normal. Like Paul said, all too soon, you'll wonder if the dog will ever settle down. If he needs to sleep, let him sleep. He's still a tiny baby, afterall. In the next few weeks, Hunter will have short spurts of playtime, and everntually, be going nonstop. Congrats on the new puppy, and welcome to the site! |

thanks you all for informing me the owner had to get rid of him and told us that he was only six weeks i should have photos up of him by next week sometime. We just had play time outside and i must say that both my room mate and i had smiles on our faces while watching him bounce around and we both realized how loyal the dogs really are to their owners as he wouldnt leave our sides while outside. Thanks again to all who responded to my questions! Huntersdad |

Hi, and welcome to you and Hunter We can't wait to see his pics!!! Everyone is correct that at 6 weeks (and for a while yet) he will sleep A LOT, but before you know it, you'll be wishing he'd take a nap Because I'm a worry wort, when you have him outside is he in an enclosed area? I'd highly recommend using a leash (if you're not) because the sooner the better for his getting used to it and because before you know it he will be easily able to out run you if he wants and if the area is not fenced in, that can be very dangerous. Also, on another note, with puppies who haven't completed their vaccination shots, there is a disease called Parvo that is very bad and highly contagious. It can live on the ground for a LONG time, so you should be careful to only take him to potty in places where you can be as sure as possible that another dog hasn't pottied there (that is how the disease is spread). Many puppies who contract Parvo do not make it We have a few members here who have nursed dogs through it, but it's very difficult. Just a couple of things to think about |

Hello and welcome to you and Hunter! He sounds really cute! Can't wait to see pics! Yes, enjoy the sleeping while you can. When he builds up his strength & gets a bit older, that little guy is gonna wear you out, but it's a good kind of tired. These are wonderful little dogs and you wil soon wonder how you could ever do without him! |

| Sometimes I look at Lloyd, when he's full speed ahead, & say...can you just sit still for 5 minutes?Seriously? On weekends when I am home all day with him, I laugh because he gets tired following me around & isn't sure what to do with himself..he'll play until he drops. On weekdays he "naps" on & off...because he is alone until I come home for lunch. |
