| Can any one give me some suggestions on getting Bailey's nails trimmed less traumatic for her. My ex used to do it, Bailey didn't like him, so I thought that was why but when I've took her to the vet she was awful. One time it took 3 people to get it done. I have to carry her into the vet's now, cause she don't want to go inside. She needs a trim now and I dread it already. Are all dogs like this? It does help her some if she'll hide her face under my arm. Thanks |

| My sister has to put a towel over her chi's face to get it done. Maybe a groomer instead of the vet. They are a little better at it. Luckily Savanna and Immi are both good about getting their nails done. They go to the groomer tho. I don't do it. |

| Nail trimming with my dog buffy is a workout! I usually trim 3 at a time, thats all she will let me do. She acts like I am going to chop of her leg. LOL. |

| Trim, treat, trim, treat. You can also try a grinder (like a dremmel - or however you spell it). If she's that bad, I'd pay the vet to do it! |

| Thanks, I do pay the vet to do it now, there's no way I could do it myself. Like Sara said, it is a workout. I think I will try a groomer next time and see if she does better. |

I like the groomer because it does not 'smell' like the vet office. I think that helps. The dogs are so sensitive to smells. Assocciation is a big part of how they react. |

I think that would make a difference. Jack is okay about me doing it as long as someone else is holding him for me. He is better at night too when he's half asleep . I like the treat idea too, so she associates it with something good. |

| Mine all put up with it, I do front paws one night and back paws another. Loco is the best, of course she's not a rattie. But I couldn't afford to have the vet trim 4 dogs very often! |

I know what you're talking about!! My Caesar is exactly the same way!! I took 3 people at Pet-smart to trim his nails. I tried to do it myself but gave up on that idea pretty faset! haha I Just take him to the groomers at Pet smart now~Don't know yet how Julia will be, we've only had her 3 weeks. Tues. she goes to the vet. for shots so I'll see if she needs her nails trimmed then. Good luck with the nail trimming! |

Illyria does good and just lays there if it's me. If my husband is there, she's going "Daddy, Daddy!! Mommy's trying to torture me!!" She such a princess about it then. So he just puts her on her back and she'll just lay there until I'm done. The last time, I cut one too short and it bled but she didn't make a peep. It was a black nail and now I'm afraid to clip those. Good luck with your pup... I'd agree about taking her to the groomers. |

| Both of mine act like im killing them. So I usually have the vet do it, but when I have to some one else has to hold them while I clip. |

| I let the groomer down the street do it. They only charge 7.00 per dog. Although they usually make Winchester bleed too, because he has all black nails. We have to put a muzzle on him. Brielle does pretty good, most of hers are white... |

Hi guys, I'd go with the trim, treat, trim treat method. Shiloh is doing alot better with it and now I kind of hug her to me with her in my lap with her back resting against my chest. I tell her how fantastic she's doing and tell her how many are left to be done. Even though we're talking about alot of nails, she truly seems to understand and only gets a treat when we are all done now and seems satisfied. After the accident though, I don't know how long it will be until she can sit like that. Oh well, we will get through it. |

I always wait until Dottie has settled down and is about ready to sleep. Most of the time she doesn't even realize that I am doing it.
Just be careful not to trim them too close, that can cause a dog to dislike having them trimmed. |

| Lucy gets hers done at the vet, but by two people. One to hold in their arms and one to trim. She does well though. I can only do one or two at a time. |

| I got Skipper's done the other night - it was tricky because he tends to bite if he feels pain (leftover from all his medical treatments before I got him)...but that was just extra incentive not to trim too close. Before that I had just been able to do a couple nails at a time on him. |

Hurray ! I was able to trim some of the twins nails this morning. I think they will be OK for a while, at least until I take them for their check up at the vets. |

| Mic started off acting like I was torturing him when trimming his nails... but now me and Kevin have worked out a system that works. I hold Mic, like he's sitting in my lap with his back leaning against me, and I talk to him... tell him a story or just let him know what's going on but in a very calm voice... and Kevin does the trimming! It's over in seconds! |

| I just got Bailey's nails trimmed yesterday and she did so much better. I did like you Kimrose, I held her and talked to her really calm and I also hid her eyes a little. The last time I had them done, it took 3 people and I felt like I had been in a fight when it was over. I want to thank everyone for the good advice. It helped. |

How often do they need thier nails trimed up? Luckly when Izzy had her scope done on her ear they clipped her nails while she was still out from the meds? I was really surprised because i didn't ask for it. They said it was complimentary!! So i don't know how she will react when she gets them done and is awake! LOL! |

I clip my pups nails when they are sound asleep. They wake up and never know what I did. Rosie...I can only do a nail or 2 at a time. Just a weird dobie thing...our other dobie always hated you even touching his paws. Buddy lets me do whatever I want...if I need to clip his nails, he lets me...he knows I would never intentionally hurt him. Any time I've taken my dogs in for surgery, or when they've been knocked out, they're nails are clipped. |

I clipped Bama's the other day. I use the clip/treat method, and it works okay. He doesn't like it, and after about 3 nails, he starts to squirm, but I'll give him a treat and I can get another 3 or so done. Fortunately, I've only made him bleed once, and he didn't act like it bothered him at all. I think it bothered me more! He doesn't mind me messing with his feet. From the time I got him, I've always rubbed them and played with them, so I guess he's just used to it. |
