Hey I am new here and was hoping I could get some info to help out my 2 baby girls.  For the past 2 months or so my rat terriers have been fighting everyday.  Its not their normal wrestling around.   They seem to be out for blood.  My only guess is that they are in heat and need to be fixed.  They are alittle over 2 years old.  Anyone else have this problem with their dogs?

They are both approximately the same age? Or siblings? I do not have any direct experience with this, but have heard that two females, especially ones that have not been fixed can have issues. How long have you had each of them. At 2 years old, they must have come into heat before, what happened last time?

My suggestion would be to have them fixed as soon as possible and if you get them both done at the same time, they can recover together.

Welcome to the site and please stick around and post often. We'd love to see some pics of your girls.

Why are they not fixed? ABsolutely that has a LOT to do with it. Hormones running rampant makes a huge difference in a female dog's personality.

I would get them spayed as soon as possible, as Tracey said. In the meantime, make every effort to supervise them and if they get too aggressive, separate them NOT as a form of punishment... but put them in their crates and give them each something to chew on.

I have had them both since they were about 2-3 weeks old.  They are sisters.  Last time they were in heat they fought a couple of times, but nothing like they are doing now.  I figured getting them fixed would help the problem.  Thanks for the reply.

How do I get a picture in my avy?  I tried and nothing happened.

I agree with Nora and Tracey - get them spayed. I wouldn't leave them alone uncrated either until after they've healed from the spaying. One of the breeders on this board has posted before about how females in heat can actually be much more vicious than males when fighting....actually seriously hurting each other.

I have been telling my wife for awhile now that they need to be fixed but she just blows it off.   Whenever they fight I bring one inside and keep one outside.  Thanks for the reply.

The fighting has gotten crazy, real vicious.  I was hoping it was just a phase but my better judgement knew that it wasn't.  Thanks for the reply.

I would again strongly suggest that they be spayed. It will not only help with their aggressiveness toward one another, but spayed females are a lot less at risk for many things like cancers. Please ask her to reconsider. There is no reason, unless you are a quality breeder to not have any dog spayed and/or neutered.

We will have a good heart to heart chat tonight about it.

To add an avatar, go to the upper right hand corner of this screen and click on "My Profile", then click on "Edit Profile". You will then see an Avatar section that has an upload box, browse to the photo file's location on your computer that you would like to use as your avatar and click on it. Once it's in the upload box, scroll down and click on Update Profile. You will after a minute see an Update Complete at the top of the page. You may have to hit refresh before you will actually see it as your avatar. If you have any problems, just let us know.

No they are both regular rats.  The little one was the runt out of the bunch but u would never know that from her behavior.  Those pictures are about 1 yr old.  I will find some more.

Well, I love their names, especially "Daisy" LOL I hope you are able to convince your wife that they need to be spayed. Let us know how it goes.

Oh, and please share more pics of Daisy and Dakota. You can start a new topic in the Photos:Rattie forum and upload up to three pics at a time. They too need to be in jpg format, but they also need to be resized so that they are 125 kb or less

Do you see one wanting to be "alpha" over the other? I had this issue when, for the first time, I had more than 1 Rat. I had my Sandy first, and then I brought in Sasha. Well, in my IGNORANCE, I figured, Sandy was first, so she'll be top dog. Boy was I wrong. I had bloodshed ALL the time. Nasty, nasty fights!! Sasha was correcting behaviors that Sandy was doing, and I would yell at Sasha to stop!! Well, I later found out, that for Sasha to show Sandy she was in charge, Sasha fought even harder because I was underminding her authority, and it was actually ME that was causing the fighting!! Once I started supporting Sasha in the alpha role, the fights subsided. I feed Sasha first. Sasha gets the best spot on the couch. I always greet Sasha first. Sasha is TOP dog.

Now of course, Sasha still fights. And 2 bitches will fight to the death, so be careful. At least with male alphas, the one male will stop once he knows he's defeated. Females are BRUTAL!!
