Hello all, first post. I'll get a picture of my little Pepper as soon as I can. It's a little late. She's 5 months, and a Rattie, Beagle mix. She just got fixed about 10 days ago. Her sitiches came out today, but yesterday and today she's just been laying around, not as energetic as she used to be.
Is this normal?
I did catch her chewing on a Euonymus plant, but I can't find consistent information. Is that poisonous to her? I told our landlord (boyfriednd's mom) not to put new landscaping in for this very reason and I don't know which it could be. I already had to pull out a Hydrangea she put in a few days ago. I know that is very bad and pulled it out right away.
Any ideas? |

She's still eating and drinking normal. She doesn't have any issues with things "coming out" either. |

Welcome to you and Pepper. Can't wait to see some pics! I don't see that plant listed on any of the usual lists. I would call your vet today and see what he/she thinks and just keep an eye on her, especially if she's eating and drinking and going potty normally. I hope she's feeling better soon. Please keep us posted |

Welcome to the site! Cant wait to see pics of Pepper. My little Lucy just got spayed a week ago last Friday, and had her stitches removed yesterday. She had a drastic behavior change the first few days after her surgery---she was very lethargic and all she wanted to do was lie in the bed and be "waited on" ---I think she was beginning to enjoy it! hahaha. I literally had to make her get up and start moving around after about the 4th day. She wouldn't eat or drink anything for at least 48 hrs after she came home---and she finally started to nibble at some of her food. She got back to her 'normal self' by the end of the first week, though, and came home after having her stitches removed ready to run and play just like she usually does. |

Welcome to the group! You'll love this place! So sorry little Pepper is feeling "puny", as we say here in Texas. Some females are like that after a spay. My Zipper was fairly lethargic and even aggressively cranky with Button for 3 or so days. The vet even had to give her doggie morphine when she came out of her anesthesia, she yelped so in the clinic. Once home, she didn't want anyone coming around her at all, really. Just stayed curled up in her crate. Ate & drank, but that's about all. But by the end of the week she was back to normal and playing as usual. So this, too, will probably pass for Pepper. I used to have a black & tan dachshund named Pepper! |

It is NOT normal for a dog to be lethargic after stitch removal. I think I would call the vet. Welcome to the site and we'll look forward to pictures. Let us know what the vet says. |

| It started the day before she had the stitches out. That's kinda why I thought it had something to do with hormones. They say it takes a week for the hormones to leave their system. I hope she's just "switched off" because of the changing weather and feels like just hanging out. I'm calling the vet in a little bit. Thanks for all the input! |

| I have to agree they shouldn't be lathargic after they get the stitches out. I had Izzy spayed about a month or so ago. She was only lathargic for about two days after she came home. She was up and running shortly after that. But was completely back to normal by the time we had the stitches out. I couldn't keep her resting long enough to make sure she didn't pull any stitches out. But maybe since your pepper is younger that may have something to do with it. But i agree she shouldn't be acting that way now yet? I would just call the vet and let them now how pepper has been acting and just see what they say to you about it. Can't hurt to ask? |

| Oh i just thought about this but maybe she was coming close to going into heat? They say usually around 6 months they can start. Some early some later? So that may have something to do with it too? But i would call the vet just to run it by them. |

| Well the good news is that she is back to her old self. The bad news is that the spot where the vet nicked her with the scissors while taking the stitches out is infected. We're going back to the vet tonight. She's also been "scooting" a lot. I'm thinking whatever was making her lazy for those couple days will be coming out that end, lol! |

Hi and welcome! Pepper is so adorable! I don't have any advice, just wanted to say hi. We are taking Crickett in either next month or in Dec for the same procedure, was nice to read about and see Pepper (but sad about the infection).
I have heard conflicting ages for this to be done, one vet says 3 to 5 months, another one says 4 to 6 months...any words of wisdom from all you kind readers?
I will add that one should expect a less active dog right after this proceedure....it's gotta hurt! It's probably painfull to get up and move around (after any surgery). They need TLC just like us two-legged beings.....and I can bet they get it!

| Um i'm not much help as to when the best time to get this done is. Izzy was just about a year old when we got her surgery done. She healed up just fine and only took her about two days to be back to normal. And yes you can be sure you won't be seeing as much jumping and activeness. Izzy had a hard time getting up on the couch but didn't want to be picked up either. She who absolutly hates her crate was taking her naps in there those few days. |
