New to the forum. have had a rat terrer for little more than a year now, love him to death. Best dog ever hands down. we've traveling tuesday to pick up a puppy to go along with the male, Charlie. does anyone know whether a male or a female would get along best with another male?

I've heard that there is usually less of a power struggle when pairing a female with a male. I have also heard that the second dog to be brought into your home is to be less dominant that the first dog in the house.

Don't let them fool ya,if you put a male with a female, the female will try to over power the male but the male needs to put his foot down and stand his ground!

oh,wait,y'all are talking about dogs....nevermind

I think as far as ratties go,male and female would be the best combo as long as both are spayed/neutered.

Yeah I would get a female. Two males would be a lot of roudyness! lol

Good question,

I have my dog here, and I have my foster dog for almost 2 weeks or so....  both males, but my foster, Sonic is about 1 year old, and Kasey is about 4 years old.  They both love to play together, and chase and so on....  The only thing that I had to watch between them, is when they get their treats... or meals.  They need to keep their space when it comes to treats or meal time....... But other than that it seems to be going pretty well.  I can't complain.

but tonight, they were so happy to see me when I came home from work, because they don't care to go outside to go potty, for my husband that is,  unless I am home.  And when one has the tennis ball, or a rope or whatever they are playing with, the other dog would try to get it out of the other's mouth....  It is alot of fun to watch them interact with each other.   I think the dominate thing tends to go back and forth to each other...  But as long as I show them that I am the alpha,  they seem to respect that and let that be.

And as of right now, they are mouthing each other, and chasing each other through out the house and wrestling and so on....

But I love them both....

You'll find something....   it'll happen when it is meant to be...

I just got another male and they are doing wonderful. I think that it being a puppy you will be fine either way. Just pick the one that seems right. I wouldn't worry about gender.

Jeff you are very correct!!!

I think as long as the puppy is young there won't be a problem either way. A young pup is naturally submissive to the older dog. I've got a mix of 1 male, 3 females (one is a whippet) and they get along fine.

Both of mine a males that are intact. We don't have any problems with them being we got the second one when my first was just a year old. They play well together and protect each other and as you can see by my avatar they snuggle with each other. So pick a puppy that fits.

I'd say female, because not only can you have alpha male squabbles, but often two males can start marking big time in the house to prove who's territory it is. Once that starts, it's hard to stop. Been there; done that. (but with male dachshunds). Just be sure to spay the female at 5 months so she doesn't ever come into that first heat (unless you plan on breeding her).

I have two females and they do everything together and seem to love each other. Of course they are sisters and were raised together. Both are about a year or so old

I think as long as its a puppy you should have no problems either way. But from experience, already had a Female (she's about 1 1/2 yrs) when I brought my little man (4 months) home. They get along just fine.
