02/08/2010 12:26 PM Well...I had to do it!

I've managed to clip most of my fosters and all my own dogs but Mayfly has always been a challenge.  Don't know why as she was never hurt while having her nails clipped.  At the vet's she'll pant and shake while they do it but she won't squirm like she does with me.  Lately she's turned into a total drama queen....yelping when she sees the clippers...squirming, etc. so that it's dangerous to clip them because I COULD nip her quick.

So for the first ever I took a dog to the groomer's.  Went to Pet Supply Plus down the road from us and for $7 plus tip we had a relatively stress free nail clipping done!  The groomer held her in one arm and clipper with the other hand.  Mayfly stared at me with betrayal in her eyes and panted but didn't squirm or yelp!

Afterwards as we waited to pay she seemed fully recovered and expecting one of the free treats they hand out at the cashier's.   So all in all...less stress for both of us!

Thank goodness I don't have to do that with all the dogs though....the rest are good at getting nails done.

Mary Beth this is a funny story, and even funnier, because I did the same thing on Saturday. I do hope she did get something yummy.

Paul can clip Lucy and Fiona, but Fiona is D-R-A-M-A, and then she was exactly the same way at the vet. Finally Paul said he is not even going to attempt it anymore, so on Saturday we went to the pet store (also to shop for Lucy's presents). Same exact thing. Calm, cute and loving doggie. Not a yelp or any stress while the groomer did hers. It's worth the $8! I also did Kip's at the same time. Then Fiona herself trotted off and helped herself to some low shelved treats.

It should say Paul can clip Lucy and Kip's.

I used to try to clip Lucy & Bo's nails, but it was like fighting a couple of chain saws. We take them to this place in town called "Pet Spa" and they will clip AND dremmel the nails smooth for only $3.00 per dog. Wouldn't you know it--the dogs shake a little like they are cold, but other than that, they let the girls there clip the nails (even the dewclaws) and never let out a yelp, never show a tooth, never snarl like they are going to eat her hands off. It's so quick and easy, not to mention cheap--that I just load up all the dogs once a month and take them to the "Spa" for mani-pedis

I am lucky, hubby is willing to hold the girls while I dremmel their nails...I've started doing it weekly and it works great for us. The stupid Pedicure didn't have the torque to really do any nail shortening, but the corded dremmel tool does, on a low speed. The only time I have trouble is on Lacey's dewclaws, so we clip those.

There is something about the groomer that the dogs don't even try to fight.

Cash is willing to let me trim his nails, on one condition. My boyfriend has to put peanut butter on all 5 fingers so he can lay on his back in the corner of the couch and lick it off while I cut his nails.

How do you know when nails need clipping. Neither dog seems too have long toenails. They do run around on our cement drive A LOT. I think that keeps them short.

Lorna, I can hear the clickity clack on the floors, and tiles. But I inspect them to see how long the nail actually is. Fiona's quick is so long that her nails are very long to cover them, they almost curl around but in actual fact not much nail. Walking on asphalt or cement does help keep them short, in the summer I don't have to do them very often.
