I took the grandkids to Shakertown today (technically, it's Shaker Village at Pleasant Hill) - it is one county over from us.  They had a blast, as did I.  We saw the worship service and heard Shaker songs, saw how they lived and worked - broommaking, the cooper, spinning and weaving, etc.  We went to the barn and saw baby goats (8 wks old) and a Tom turkey and three baby turkeys, sheep, oxen, etc etc.  Then, while riding around the property (back where the horse trails start) we saw two deer -- one very closeup (got a great photo).  So, they really had a great time.  We had rain on and off today, so it was the perfect day to do this activity, as we could dodge the rain storms in the various buildings.  I love Shakertown and have taken so many people there I can recite all the things I've learned over all the visits.    Every time I go I learn something new!   I really should work there!

That sounds like fun! I love visiting historical places and learning how they lived. It almost sounds like this place my parents brought us when I was really little... can't remember the name but I remember they brushed their teeth with very bad tasting sticks that they shredded into brushes... they sold them as souvenirs when we were there... weird that I remember that.

Hmmmm, don't think that was the Shakers. The Shakers are often thought of as being like the Amish and sticking to the "old ways" - BTW, we have Amish here in our county. But actually, the Shakers were very innovative and loved "technology". Many credit them with inviting the flat broom - there is some question about that, but they did invent a machine to easily turn the round broom into flat (flat sweeps a larger area). They were the first to put seeds in little packets to sell, they developed a "washing machine" that was powered by a horse walking. The weird thing about the Shakers is that they did not believe in marriage. Men and women lived as "brothers and sisters" and the children were raised by the community. They thought they'd get enough converts from the outside world, but that didn't work out so well. There are three remaining Shakers in Maine.

I remember going to Shakertown years ago. Many years ago actually cause I was in High School and we went there on a field trip. I guess I need to go back someday.

I remember seeing that in some of your photos.  I love Shaker art and furniture.

I have been to Shakertown... it's very interesting, and the history of this group of people is also very interesting. I also love the furniture they made... the simplistic, country lines... a far cry from all the huge, ornate furniture we see that is produced in mass quantities these days!
