My brain just refuses to comprehend that I'm not young anymore.  It takes my 40 year old body to slap me upside the head to make me accept what I don't want to accept.  I mentioned the other day that I had joined the gym on Monday.  Well, I did cardio and upper body weights on Monday, cardio and lower body on Tuesday, and yesterday I just did cardio because my arms were still a little sore and I knew I didn't need to do lower body two days in a row.  Well, today I can barely walk!!!  I know it's from the hip adduction machine because of where I'm sore--I'm just not as flexible as I was, oh, 5 years ago.  Needless to say, I haven't been to the gym today.  I may go later and just walk on the treadmill.  SLOWLY!!

Does the gym have a steam room?

I agree, getting old sucks!

WooHoo on joining the gym! Go slowly and pace yourself. Your body will develop muscle and stamina but do not over do it. You will burn out. I worked with a trainer for about a month and she gave me that lecture. I was taking about 3 classes per day, plus lifting weights and was in PAIN.

Slow-n-steady...that's the key.

SEE! That's why I stay away from the gym. I might break a hip or something. I need my fat to cushion my falls.

There is a pool, and I thought about just going and swimming for a bit, but there isn't a steam room (unless it was just overlooked when I was shown around.)

Are you stretching before you use the machines? That makes a huge difference.

Funny you should ask.    Remember...my brain didn't think my body was as tight and out of shape as it is, so I didn't need to stretch!  NOOOOOO--stretching is for WIMPS!  HAHAHAHA  Guess who's a wimp now?  hahahaha

You definitely want to stretch and I second the idea of swimming.

If you don't like stretching, try warming up on the treadmill, by doing a brisk walk for 15-20 minutes. Then while your muscles are warm and supple, you can stretch. I also recommend a little yoga to keep you pliable. Your body will love you for stretching.

BTW, 40 is NOT OLD! You're just ripe for the picking.
