What is the best thing to get the ammonia smell out of the carpet? in the carpet cleaner I am using a Pet Formula, but when I got home from work tonight, first thing that hit my nose was the dog smell.....
More poop and pee... I do believe Punkin was an outside dog before rescue.. I do wonder why the foster parents didn't try and train her, they had her for nearly 5 months before I got her...
I am at my wits end here.. Heart House smelled so nice when I first got here.... Punkin is the perfect dog, other than ruining the carpet...
The carpet hardly has time to dry when I am hitting it again with the machine..
I believe that Sassy would be lost without Punkin, they play all the time.. They crack me up with the rip roaring around the house chasing each other....

Jan, I'm sorry it's rough going. I don't know what advice to give. I know your 10 hour shifts prevent you from wanting to try crate training, and I don't know how else to housebreak a dog unless your a person who stays at home and can watch him/her constantly. It's going to be awfully hard to do without you there to offer and immediate correction for going potty in the house on a consistent basis. Hopefully someone else will have some ideas. They only thing I know about the odors is you're supposed to use something with active enzymes in it that actually gets rid of the smell rather than masking it. |

| Jan I use something called pets and kids...or some crazy name like that. I get it at Walmart. I used it when Sampson peed all over our bedroom floor (through his crate) all the time and the smell just got horrendous (even though we had been cleaning it) I took the bottle and basically just poured the whole thing over the spot where his crate was and the outter area around it (probably a 4 x 4 spot) All you do is pour it up there and make sure you soak it good so it goes through to the padding and that's it! I can even get on my hands and knees to get something out from under our bed (right where the crate was) and I don't smell anything! Max and Sampson never act like they smell anything either. HTH!! |

Hi Jan,
I was told the the same thing that Tracey just said... something about the enzymes.... get some kind of cleaner that will get rid of the pee smell. I have the same problem too. I just cleaned my carpet earlier this week, and i can still smell it... I know how you feel.
I did have a foster dog for a while and he had anxiety problems and eleminations was one of his biggest signs. and it was hard to clean his pee smell. and for some reason, Kasey is starting to do it too... but in Kasey's case, i believe it's more to do with late night peeing, because I would fall asleep with the kids upstairs, and I assumed my husband just gone to bed, and there Kasey was... he had to go.. poor guy... I need to remind my husband to let him out before going to bed.
So finally, John brought home something, and it said something about the natural enzyme ingredients attack stains and foul odors. I plan on using it either tonight or tomorrow and if it works, I'll let you know. Like I said, I know how you feel....
I hope this helps. It sure is frustrating.... and tiring.
Good Luck! |

| One more thing to add Jan. I did read that if you use a normal rug cleaner first you could set the smell/stain and not be able to get it all the way out. You should always use the "pet" cleaner FIRST. Good luck, I hope it gets better soon. I know you are gone long hours, but crating may be the only resort. What about keeping her in a smaller room or bathroom? |

| I still wonder if a large cat box might help, you'd be dealing with kitty litter on the carpet though. I had a dog in an apartment that was litter box trained, put the puppy pads in a circle around the cat box so she'll know what to do with it.We use a product called ODO-BAN sold in walmart in their "As seen on TV!" section (ask a walmart helper person, also I shake liberally the ground spice, cloves all over he carpet before vacuuming. Takes care of urine smell as well as teenage boy foot odor! Woohoo! (I have between 4 and 9 teenage boys in my house every day) Cloves are the only thing I've found that kick that smell. And the ODO-Ban has an active enzyme that I can't pronounce in it... |

Thanks all.. Sarah, the pet formula is the only thing thats been used on the carpet... I was thinking of maybe a little vinegar? maybe even sprinkle baking soda then vacume up... I dunno .... I will look for the enzyme formula at Wally world... |

| I dont know your particular situation but if the dogs cant be walked why are they inside?? Ratties are resiliant - they can handle a lot. we have an outdoor run (15x24) for our labs and rattie and our bulldog stays inside but has a doggie door that goes to a fenced area. #1 Natures Miracle... the enzymes will eat the ammonia in the urine... it takes time tho... #2 - get those dogs outside :-) theres lots of ways to be creative and make a fun outdoor pen for them... we have a ramp with an elevated platform that our dogs LOVE.. they play king of the hill :-) Good luck and be patient.. talley took over 6 months to house train... just when i would think he would have it down he would walk over and hike on something... now he is 99.9% (are they ever 100%) trained... but i still dont leave him loose unsupervised... carpet is expensive and so is my sanity!! hehhe |

| oh one other advice - if you are in an apartment - when i was in an apartment i put together a "litterbox" with real grass on the patio and had a doggie door to the patio.. |

Talleysmom I have a fenced yard... and when I'm home they are out constantly... I do think Punkin went and pee'd on the puppy pad a bit ago.. I saw her go toward the bedroom and watched her... there wasn't any wet spots on the carpet but there was on the pad.. Sassy has been trained to pads from nearly day one... Punkin is adopted and hasn't been here 2 months yet... so that I understand.. I'm afraid to leave them in the yard the whole 10 hours I'm at work... I have a rather strange neighbor that I don't trust... |

| ahhh i understand... boy that would be hard... when i moved to our new house we had no fence... 3 dogs in my new house... my husband said i had to wait to put up a fence till the shop was built!!! so of course i waited till he was at work then put up a fence by myself :-) now that we are expanding it he has decided he better just go along and help so at least it looks nice this time :-) hang in there... i eventually had to gate talley in the room with me so i could watch him.. he was determined to pee anywhere but outside... |

I was gong to recommend baking soda. It almost works on cat urine, which is near to impossible to remove, but it should work on doggie urine.
Another thing may work, but may stain...coffee grinds. |

Can you maybe restrict them to an area where there isn't carpet since you don't want them in a crate for that long? Like maybe have them restricted to just the kitchen or just the bathroom, that way messes are easy to clean? Are they only having accidents when you are at work or all the time? Do you leave food and water down for them when you are gone? If it's only when you are at work, I would just make sure they don't have any food or water and make sure they don't get any for several hours before you leave for work. |

I use Nature's Miracle. It has the enzyme stuff in it. Someone on this board told me to use it. I bought a big bottle and spent an hour on my knees on my carpet... I soaked the carpet let it work then came back and blotted it up with a white cloth. I used a scrub brush too. It is odorless and it works. I also used the ordor removing candle. Between the two... I'm ordor free. When you have an accident on the carpet and don't get the odor out or use the enzyme, they can smell it and they will go back and do it over and over again... I hope this works... but keep trying... cause they are too cute to not to love and take care of... |
