She is absolutely terrified of strange men. She's really good around my guy friends that she knows, but any other unfamiliar male she starts shaking unbelievably and cowers if they try and pet her. She loves females and children though. Is this typical rattie behaviour? Or is this a typical sign that she might have been abused? When she was a small pup she was found abandoned on the streets of NOLA...so I don't have much history on her.

Poor Cookie

Who knows what Cookie's past was - same with Max. We think that he was probably "on the streets" at some point too.  He isn't too afraid of anyone (except he doesn't like other dogs and always barks at this one particular relative)

She is lucky to have you as a mom!

I dunno? Dilly will shiver all over, cower (sometimes peeing) and seem scared sometimes, even though what she really is is overwhelmingly excited! We've had her since she was 9 weeks (and visited her from 5 wks on) so we KNOW she was never abused in any way, shape or form. Dilly is especially distrustful of new males though.
I guess you'll never really know, but all the love and care she has been getting from you I'm sure has made all the difference in her life. Dogs are such forgiving creatures.

I hate the thought of Cookie or Max or any other animal being abused, but I know it happens all too often. Bob is much more wary of men than of women and it takes him longer to warm up to men. Which is strange since he lives in a house with three men and only one woman. It may be because the men are louder and bigger than women?

The breeder I got Brielle from, said females are kind of scared of young men, or teenagers, if they have not grown up with them. Males are usually more comfortable with anyone. I think she said it is because the young men are more hyper, and seen as unpredictable by the female ratties, which have a motherly instinct, and are very protective of their family. Whereas male ratties like to play more.

I think it is that men tend to be bigger and deep louder voices, this is probably why dogs are more intimidated (generally speaking of course) by them. Dilly too lives in a house full (4) of men/boys but is STILL distrustfull of any new males she meets.

Also- this is why when Dilly refuses to behave for me I ask hubby or oldest son to tell her the same thing, and they don't have to yell, it's just the tone and deepness of their voice that gets her attention and she behaves for them! (Plus hubby is very clearly Alpha in the family and Dilly KNOWS that!)

My Anna is the same way with strange men, and we know she was mistreated/neglected before coming to us. But I agree, it's not always the case - they just may make her uncomfortable for lots of reasons.

Anna's favorite people now are my hubby, son, and father-in-law

Max used to roll over on his back when we first got him.  Probably thought that we were going to hit him or something.
He also doesn't give kisses (which sometimes is a good thing)  He might have been punished for it.

He is very sweet despite of everything he's been through.

When Cookie gets excited to see someone she grins (with teeth) and jumps in their lap and does a little dance. With the strangers she shakes and hides behind my legs. It's kind of pitiful.

Can you tell the strangers to just ignore her at first and go slowly until she calms down?

My sons were shy and standoffish to strangers or people they didn't see very often when they were little.  So many people would come up to them and want to hug, hold, or touch them.  My boys would nearly strangle me, clinging to me as if they were terrified this stranger was going to rip them out of my arms and carry them off!  I would have to tell people that they were shy and to just give them time.  Of course, some people don't have any common sense.

Lucy barks at strange to her men that come to my house. If she hasn't met them before she goes crazy. But it's more of an aggressive bark than a scared thing. She is protecting me. But Lucy does hide from small children in public until they give her a treat. Poor cookie though.

Poor Cookie...You have to wonder what goes throught there little minds.
Ernie doesn't have trouble with men but does have issues with riding in the car. He does fine as long as we don't stop. He thinks we will leave him. He freaks out totally.
He was found on the side of the road as a puppy, I wonder if he remembers riding in a car and someone just dropping him off. It makes me sad...

You know, Mitzy is odd in the car, too.  She doesn't freak out but no matter how far we travel, even if the other dogs are sleeping, she won't sleep....she stays wide awake and watches the driver.  She, too, was found on the road...we think she was just dropped off and abandoned.

Now, Mayfly is really nervous of strangers (male or female) and takes a while for her to used to new people.  But we've had her since 9 wks, it's mostly because I didn't socialize her enough the first 6 months.

Skipper, has a way of flinching when anyone reaches for him, even to pet him.  Like he's been hit.  Also, when we call his name he stops dead and crouches and goes very still....not sure what that's about...
