I'm trying to grow my first garden. Keep in mind, I'm from Manhattan; if you can't grow it in a pot, you're out of luck.

So, I am trying to grow a variety of tomatoes, red cabbage, collards, zuke and cucumbers. In pots, I have habaneros and cilantro.

Anyone have tips for a garden-growing newbie

I get great veggies because I have a ready supply of horse manure!

Biggest best tasting tomatos you will ever have with a little horse manure! If you know any place with horses, they will probably just give it to you. The key is to use the dry stuff and it will flake apart as you rub it in your hands & mix it with your dirt.

I put the garden in all by myself this year....hubby has always done the gardening. His hands really don't work any longer and it is hard since he broke his neck. I used a lot of black plastic so I could limit my weeding. Right now everything is looking good except for my acorn winter squash. Tried to go with all heirlooms! So we will see! Do know you have to water and watch the bugs...which can be hard to keep under control! You can use seven [a short lived pesticide] or try using soapy water and taking them off by hand. My summer squash that I planted in the plastic are twice the size of the ones I planted next to the plastic! Good luck!

Great suggestion Ordie and Maureen, I'll definitely try soapy water. I had a bunny, who was pillaging, but a speeder killed it!

Sorry about your husband Maureen...a broken neck, can't imagine
