I have been e-mailing a lady about a rat terrier female she listed on craigslist.com.  She sent me a picture and some information.  I told her that I would need Jerry to meet her to make sure they were a good match and asked if she was available this weekend.  I have not heard anything else from her.  I sent her another e-mail as I was leaving work last night and gave her my personal e-mail (she had been sending them to my work e-mail) and my cell phone #.  Still nothing.  So now I'm not sure what to think.

I'm actually a little torn.  We've been planning on adopting another dog for a long time.  We just wanted to wait until we were moved into the new house.  I've always planned on rescuing a shelter dog.  I found a female rat terrier in foster care about an hour away from here.  She sounds just perfect for us:  2 year-old female, 16 pounds (so she could hold her own with Jerry!), loves dogs, cats, kids & adults, crate-trained & loves to snuggle.  There is an adoption fee of $175 for her, but this isn't an issue at all.  I've been expecting to pay an adoption fee and have money set aside in my savings account.  I haven't contacted them yet about her because I wanted to wait until we were moved in.  I figured that if she was adopted before we were able to meet her, then it just wasn't meant to be.  Now I'm not sure what would be best.  If this works out with the craigslist rattie, I think it is still a good thing because her owners would have some peace of mind and know she was going to a good home.  But I don't know if it would be better to help a dog that is in need like a shelter dog.  I'm just not sure what to do.

I don't know what to tell you, except things often have a way of working out. Perhaps this lady not calling you back is pointing you in the direction of the rattie in rescue. Is that rattie still there? Sometimes you just have to let things fall into place. I personally think every dog needs a good home -- once a puppy has been brought into this world, they need a home, no matter where they are. You know, with all the dogs I've had (and I've always had more than one) I've never had them meet beforehand to know if they were a good match. I guess I just figured they would work it out and they always have. My dogs have always loved each other. The only exception might have been my old dog, Bonnie -- she never got close to Katie, as she was so old and Katie just a pup. But, she didn't seem to mind having Katie around. Maybe she knew she would not be here long for Katie, so kept her distance.
Anyway, I will hope that you get an answer and can decide what to do. Keep us updated.

Yes, the rattie in foster care is still available. I think that you're right about things working out the way that they're supposed to. I'm not really too worried about Jerry getting along with another dog. He loves every dog he has ever met!

I think that when someone goes on Craiglist, they get so many e-mails. It's so popular right now. I wonder if she got so many e-mails that she didn't keep them straight. Just a thought. Did she post a phone number?
I know from family using Craiglist for items for sale, the first to respond or get there is the first to get the item, even though others have inquired or debated.
I hope you are able to figure out what's going on.

I know what you mean about Craigslist. I posted an ad to try to re-rent our duplex and just got flooded with e-mails. Quite a few were scammers too. They wanted to rent the duplex, but I would need to tell them my bank account number so they could wire me the money.

And just what is wrong with having three ratties?

Oh, I wish! My mom keeps telling me that we should have bought an acreage instead so that I can have all the dogs that I want.

I know what you mean - I responded to that one yesterday on craigslist. The lady replied back that she didn't have any pictures yet - and where she was...said she had 25 other e-mails to respond to. Ummmm if you want to get rid of the dog - tell me when i can come see it. It's about an hour away -but I'm willing to go down to see him. I e-mailed back hoping she would call my cell and tell me when I could see him. And she didn't answer my e-mail yesterday till 11:30pm. Does she work evenings??

I'm like you - figure if it's meant to be it will be.

You don't need acreage for these little guys, just a big oversized corner lot, with a fenced back yard...Really not even that big of an area, because they will run around in whatever size yard they have.

That's too bad, he sounded like a cutie! The rattie I responded about was free to a good home, so she probably got a lot of responses. The thing about advertising a *free* dog is that they may not be getting the best home for her. So many people view those ads and when there is no adoption fee or reference check, they may end up giving the dog to a person that has no idea how to properly care for her.

Everything happens for a reason. I hope this works out, but as you have said you always did think about rescuing. No matter what happens that rattie will hopefully find a good home. Hope you hear back soon

I agree ... you've got 8 days to go until you can start getting settled in your new home. Everything will work out as it should. Can't wait to see your new addition - whichever one it is !!!
