cook after a long day of cleaning and doing laundry!!

Everyone was griping about how hungry they were around 5:00.  I came in with a total attitude trying to figure out what to cook.  I was slamming cabinet doors, hitting my cooking utensils much harder on the kitchen counter and grumbling under my breath.

Here's my conversation with myself....

"Why do I have to cook stupid dinner tonight??  I mean, everyone knows how much I hate cooking especially since I've cleaned the whole house and did all the laundry today!  I mean, really!  Joe (my hubby) loves to cook and he's been enjoying his Sunday washing his motorcycle.  He's not tired.  Why can't HE cook for once??  Oh, I hate touching raw chicken.  It looks so freakin' gross!Ugh, where's the potato peeler?  Crap!  I burned my finger...  oh great!  Now I'm injured.  Poor me...oh, this stupid grill isn't ready yet!  Ugh, what are those kids doing now??  Geez, I hope I have milk for the mashed potatoes.. oh, yeah I do, good.  Did I tell you that I hate to cook.  Yes, you did and I'm sick of hearing about it.  Shut up and feed your family!!"

So, after my little silent rant, dinner got cooked somehow and everyone gobbled it up.  They loved it!

So, now I feel like a jerk cuz I made a meal with an attitude... after all, they were hungry and I am kind of responsible for cooking for them.

Ordinarily my response would be "where in the bible is it written that the woman does all the cooking?" I get soooo tired cooking. I've cooked all my life. Started when I was 12 and I had supper on the table ready to eat when my mom came home from work. So I never grew up knowing any differently... and when I got married I kept doing it.

I have a friend who's hubby does ALL the cooking... I'm so jealous!

On the flip side... usually if the wife doesn't work outside the home, the responsibility does fall on her. Is it right? I dunno.... but I do know that's usually how the ball bounces... would you agree?

I mowed the yard today... weeded the landscaping.. bathed the three dogs (he was out of town and took Buster with him).... had just settled in to take a break awhile ago, and he comes home. I said "Have you eaten yet?" He says "no... figured I'd wait until I got home... figured you'd have something fixed." Well... I didn't !! He got grilled cheese sammiches...

I feel terrible to admit this, but until our son came along, I hardly cooked.
I had an aversion to handling dead, raw meat. In fact, I ended up becoming an vegetarian, because the touch of meat repulsed me.

Although, I like to cook, I don't always WANT to cook. Plus, I feel that men should share household responsibilities (my brothers didn't and I hated that they didn't help out). Soooo, I do cook, but I freeze a few meals, for those days when I just can't hack being in the kitchen.

ETA: Wouldn't you know that during my pregnancy, I became a carnivor and I am now known as the grilling queen.

LOL!!!

Yup, I'm the stay home mommy so I get the job of cooking...  grrr!!   I HATE it!

Joe will cook when he has time for it.  He  loves it and says it relaxes him.  I say, "Then YOU'VE got the job!!"    Unfortunately, he's not home in time to make it.

I cook almost every night, do all the housework, yard work, laundry, errands, grocery shopping, bill paying, kid wrangling, carpooling, etc...  I help with our business and write books.  It would be SO nice if someone else could handle dinner.  I mean, how great would it be to walk in the door around 5:00 to a wonderful smelling kitchen and food spread out??  Oh man!  Now that would be heaven!!  I mean, seriously, these people expect three meals a day with snacks included...

Running a home is no easy business. It doesn't end at 5 pm and it definitely starts earlier than 9 am. Your job is never, EVER done.
I work from home and there are times when hubby forgets that in between real work, I have house work and baby work and yard work...after I remind him, he's usually pretty gracious, but for those few moments that he forgets...boy do I want to scream

OH, I was the same way during all three of my pregnancies.  I couldn't look at raw meat without getting sick.  I got over it but I still hate touching raw chicken.  It really really grosses me out.

I'm good grilling too.  I guess it's just the time of day that I have to prepare this big meal... I'm so worn out by 5:00, all I want to do is sit back and relax...  Cooking is NOT my choice of activities at the end of the day.

I'm with ya, Nora...  I would rather cook a big meal for breakfast or lunch even than at dinner time.  I was the queen of 1-800-DO-U-DELIVER ?? last week after all that work we did on our other house.    I guess it was time I fired up the stove... it was getting rusty from non use...

Crock Pot, ladies, Crock Pot! Chop up your veggies and meat in the morning, plug it in, and let it do the cooking for you. Or, stick in a roast or chicken and you've at least got your main course taken care of. There's nothing nicer than coming home at the end of a long hard day and knowing that dinner will be waiting for you in the crock pot, plus smelling those great smells as soon as you walk in the door.

Oh, believe me!!  If my husband wasn't such a picky eater... we'd have crock pot meals EVERY night!    Nope, everything is made from scratch, nothing can touch on his plate, no sauces, creams or weird marinades...

Yes, he's totally spoiled and I did it to myself...

How old are your kids? They could learn to cook (or at the very least assist you). At least once a week my kids make dinner (they are all boys, 16, 12 & 10). Sometimes it's just scrambled egg or burgers on the grill, but at least I don't have to do it, and they're learning to be self-sufficient (which is the ultimate goal in raising youngun's!)

Very true, Tina.  I have an eleven year old, 9 year old and 4 year old.  They do help... especially my daughter.  My oldest knows how to cook with supervision... they have to set the table and do the dishes every night...

I have never enjoyed cooking...  but at least I have a family to cook for... I shouldn't complain...

Okay--I feel like a REALLY bad wife!    From the end of May until the first of August, I'm home all day, most every day, and how many times does John walk in to a house with delicious smells during that time?  I could probably count them on one hand.    I don't mind cooking IF I have some idea of what to fix.  I get in such a rut, and John doesn't ever help out as far as telling me that he'd like a particular meal.  There are some nights when he'll get in, and I've done N-O-T-H-I-N-G all day and he still ends up cooking.    One reason I hate to cook is that our house doesn't have central air, so the kitchen ends up so blasted hot any time I turn the stove or oven on, and I'm not a griller.  I can't make a good fire, so everything either burns or takes forever to cook.  John is an EXCELLENT griller, though, so I never felt I needed to learn.

I agree Pam!  The Crockpot is the greatest invention ever... and my favorite thing in the crockpot is chuck pot roast w/potato and carrots... yummy!

I've even been making the dogs their "wet" food in the crockpot, and then mashing/blending and freezing it in small batches.... they love it!

I don't mind cooking, but when I have been doing it for a long time! Right now everyone depends on me to cook! So there are days that I really don't know what to make! I try and make our main meal early in the day...I'm retired! Or just tired!! It is harder now that I take care of the Grandkids! Think I need a meal planner! HA!

Ok, I must say that the crock pot was once my best friend. I used to use it all the time. If not the crock pot then I cooked my behind off. I swore when I became single, I'd never cook like that again and I DON"T. Now that I'm dating and have met a really special guy, HE likes to grill and HE likes to take me out to eat all the time. It does get a little boring, but I've learned to eat out healthy and I enjoy it. One good thing is there are no dirty dishes to come home to. I don't ever use the stove anymore...I'm a very blessed woman.

MY idea of a good meal is how fast can I cook it and clean it up. I hate to cook. I cooked a lot over the weekend with family here, but last night we went out for pizza for my granddaughter's birthday and tonight we're having hamburgers.
