All three of my kids were home while I was cooking dinner...keeping tabs on them plus the grill...well, my oldest son went in the house.  I didn't think about it until dinner was almost done, so I call his cell phone (the only purpose of him having one is so that I can check up on him, call him home for dinner, etc..)

His bedroom starts ringing!  He was not in the house and he left his phone (something he NEVER does).  I checked for his bike and scooter...all home.   So, I started calling all his friends..no one had seen him.  I got in my car and started driving all over the neighborhood...NO ONE had seen Jake!    It was getting too weird.

So I called home to my very worried husband and asked him to check Jake's room again.. see if his skateboard was there, see if he was under his air hockey table (he likes to talk on the phone-makes a fort, it must be a boy thing).
Anyway, no sign of Jake and his skateboard was there!!!  OMG!

Now, at this point I just knew he was in danger, dead, stolen, whatever!!  My mind had concocted the most horrible situation!  I was about to call the police (tell them what, you ask...dunno...I was just scared out of my mind!)
My neighbor was pulling out and I stopped her to ask if she had seen Jake...her two boys piped up and said, "Yeah, he's in the creek!"

What??  Jake NEVER plays in the creek with the younger boys.  I run screaming with cell phone in one hand and car keys in another for him.  He pops up and says, "Yeah, Mom?  What's up??"

"What's up??  I have been looking for you for over an hour!  Your dad has been calling everyone under sun!  And you are SO grounded!!!"

"Mom, what exactly did I do wrong?  I forgot my cell phone...haven't you ever forgotten stuff before?"

"Well, you're still in trouble young man!"

"But why?"

Long pause..."I don't know.. You scared the beejesus out of me so that's why!!"

He looked at me and smiled and said, "I love you too, MOM!"

I need a drink!

Shannon, after reading this whole nerve-wracking story (I dont mind telling you, I was very worried while reading this!) and I got to the next-to-the- last line, I smiled.  You are very blessed to have a boy that KNOWS that you worry because you love him!  (go easy on him, mom)

Ah yes but the glory here is: they grow up and go thru the same things themselves!!

More than once here lately my Son has asked me "Mom what am I gonna do with him?"

All i can say is I feel for him. When i was a kid,we ran all over town and never worried about anything happening to us,now even as i'm alot older,i won't walk to the end of the street without a weapon on me.He's a kid though,he does need to still be able to have fun because if he doesn't experience things now,he'll do it when he's older and when things will be alot worse.

Shannon, I'm so glad he was safe and sound. Too bad it cost you several gray hairs. Oh, and the standard answer to the "But why?" question is "BECAUSE I SAID SO!"

Okay, I have to laugh at that, Jeff!!!    Jake SO has it made!!  Moms just are overprotective...that will never change in this house...
This morning he asked me if he was really grounded...  hehe
He's just not allowed to forget his phone next time he's out!

I agree with your last sentence...he does have fun and lots of freedom but I have to know where he is, what he's doing and what time he'll be home.  In this day and age...I have to be vigilant.  Only cuz I love the little turd!!
