I have a very challenging yard!! My front yard is fescue...full of dandelions...ack! and the backyard is Bermuda...brown in winter, green in summer. I spent all day working in my yard and I am so wiped out!
Is there something I can put on my grass to kill the dandelions and other weeds without killing the new seed I put down a few weeks ago?
We spread lime, fertilizer and seed about a month ago... the yard is nice and green but I still have the weeds... what do I do?? Help!!!

Pick 'em. Get your basket and dandelion digger, a cold beverage, take Mario and start pickin'! If you are careful, you can use round-up and just hit the weed only...it'll take a couple of times, several days apart, to kill them, but they will shrivel up and die. I hate the weeds...we've got bermuda in the back...i've spent the better part of the last 3 weeks pulling chick-weed, hen-bit and dandelions. The hard work pays off in the end!

You could keep the dandylions. My granddaughter loves them and picks them for me. And it keeps her out of the flower bed flowers, because the dandylions are hers! I put in the little English daiseys too for the little kids in the lawn. They like to have flowers that are OK for them to pick anytime they want. And my lilys are able to bloom unmolested by small children that way.

If it weren't for weeds, my yard wouldn't be green at all. :)

LOL...that is a running joke in my house..."At least the weeds are green!!" The yard actually looks pretty good today. I just can't wait until the backyard turns green. I hate Bermuda grass and don't get why the first homeowners here put that in back and a different grass out front. Oh well, I shouldn't complain. ;)

My neighbor used a homemade mixture:

1 gallon of white vinegar
1 cup of table salt
1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap

Mix until the salt dissolves, pour into a hand-held spray bottle and spray the solution directly on the weeds.

Oh, great...I'll have to try that. I just don't want to kill my new grass... does that work on all weeds or just dandelions??

I am not sure he did it last weekend... He seeded it last fall and again last weekend... When I walked by the other day I did see some new grass coming up. But it is a cheap mixture so you will not loose much money if it does not work.

Do what we do - relax and enjoy the weeds! We're too busy to worry about the yard beyond the basic cutting of grass, trimming of hedges.

I wish I could, MB!! I'm a bit obsessive/compulsive! Last year, we ripped the yard out and installed a sprinkler system...we planted new seed and it came in just beautifully...then summer hit and the heat from the sun killed the new grass and weeds grew in its place. We got a letter from our homeowners association saying our yard looked like crap (basically) and that we would be fined if we didn't do something about it. I was SO upset since we had been trying SO hard to make it nice. I'm a fanatic about keeping the house clean, etc. So, to have a weed infested yard is killing me! I know, I know, don't sweat the small stuff... I'm working on it. I'm posting a pict in the photo forums of the front of my house. It really doesn't look too bad in this picture..judge for yourself. ;)

Oh gosh that's not good when the association is stepping in.

Have you got your soil tested to see what might be the problem? When it is summer have you tried watering for two hours at night every other day? When you water less the roots grow into the ground more so when it is hot outside the top soil is dry but it is moist under it.

You could call scotts or trugreen, just have them come out once or twice to get them under control so it is more managable for you.

Well, I would love to have a company come out and treat the yard BUT my hubby doesn't believe in paying anyone to do something we can do ourselves! UGH! So, I think I'm going to ask someone at a home improvements store for advice. There has to be something out there that is safe for the grass but will kill the weeds.
And, yes, when we ripped out the old yard, we tilled the ground and added in top soil. We worked really hard to end up with this!!
Oh, and the "person" who drove by and complained did it to 37 houses all in one day! Yeah, she has no life!!
And we do run our sprinklers twice a day for 10 minutes each (every other day). I should find out how much is appropriate. (sigh)

My husband and I tried to fix our yard by ourselves for about a yr (my husband wanted to do it himself too), but never could get it to look great, so thats why we have Scotts now. I know scotts carries alot of there brand things at Home Depot, maybe you could look there for some weed killer.

Mary Beth! Spoken like a Floridian! I have Bahia grass, goes dormant in the winter, and the weeds take over, (at least they're green) then as soon as it rains, (like it did here this week) the Bahia will grow like weeds! I have to mow it twice a week in the summer.

Shannon, I'm not sure where you live, and depending on the type of grass in your front lawn, Scotts Turf Builder plus, seems to be a popular choice here. Feeds the grass, and kills the weeds. BUT, read the lable, it will kill some types of grass. (including Bahia)

Thanks, Deb! I live in SC, right on the border on Charlotte, NC. My backyard grass is brown in winter and green in the summer. I also have to cut it twice a week in the summers. I don't care so much about the back as I do the front. The front yard is fescue.. It is green now but the dandelions are taking over. I might try that Scotts Turf Builder plus.
Oh, and Sarah (smoore)... so you know what I'm dealing with...hubby knows everything and has to do everything!! LOL ;) My hope is that he gives in and lets a pro deal with it! :)
