So there is a neighbor of mine who is a blind 57 y/o woman who basically lives alone in another apartment building. A few weeks ago her friend was coming to stay (a frail thing) and when Adam and I were walking Nibbler, the friend saw us and asked Adam to take some heavy box up to her apartment. He did, and I was NOT about to leave him alone with some women so I went as well.

Her apartment was HORRIBLE. It smelled bad, there were roaches everywhere, even INSIDE the fridge. I know that she is blind but still. It was so hot in there, that Nibbler started panting and we were just standing there. Well he was laying.

Anyway, ever since then, she's come knocking on our door always at like 9:30-10:00p.m. That's our bed time. And she stays for an hour/hour and a half. She is very religious and she is always praying to god about everything. She prays before she tells us an idea of hers to make sure that God approves. I grew up in a religious family, but I've never been exposed to such religious ferver that she thinks Jews are going to hell, homosexuals are goign to Hell... and she isn't afraid to say it.

She has started to also go over to the people who live across from us, who are a really nice couple who are about mine and Adam's age and doing the same thing with them. It has come to the point now that we don't answer our door, and we look around before going outside because we are afraid that she will be there.
As much as I feel bad fore her, I just don't have the time to spend an hour and a half every night or morning speaking to her. and I don't want to go in her apartment becuase it looks like i'd could get sick and I don't want her in mine becuse nibbler always growls and barks at her, and if he doesn't have ag ood feeling... then I don't either.... But I do n't want to be a prisoner in my own apartment!

Even if a person is disabled, they can still be a pain in the rear. But I know what you mean about feeling guilty about being mean to her. Take her blindness out of the equation, what would you do/say to a sighted person who was making you feel this way? You could politely tell her that you don't agree with her viewpoints and don't really have time to visit with her.

Well its not really the blindness that bothers me, its more like, she is just a little ol godly woman...and the crazy thing is, Thursday night Adam and I were talking about her and how she gets on our nerves, and he went outside to our patio during the storm to keep a plant from drowning, and just as he was about to come in, lightning struck so close to him he could feel the heat. His skin was even pink! And my neighbor came over, and I didn't even tell her about this and she told me about how the same thing happened to her husband and they had just talked about her too!!! Weird huh? I know its probably coinsidence, but how crazy is karma?

Yikes! She may have more than just God's ear. I didn't mean that her blindness bothers you, I just meant that you should treat her the way you would treat anyone else who was pestering you.

Okay, do NOT let a nutcase freak you out! She sounds not so much "Godly" but like a religious fanatic...and they are scary whether they're Christian, Moslem, Hindu or whatever. She sounds really creepy, I'd stay away from her.

I think I will, espeically since she gives Nibbler the heeby jeebies. and he's the kind of dog that runs up and licks all sorts of strangers. Even a bum on the street.

Yeah, that's partly why I said she was creepy....when a friendly dog meets someone and gets freaked out - be careful!  They have excellent sense about those things.

Just my un asked for advice.

Have you look into a support group or a Church group to help her with her appartment and loneliness?

That's great advice. Maybe social services could help her too.

Hmmm.  You could tell her you're Jewish and you don't have time to talk because you're too busy packing for your trip to hell.

Sorry, couldn't help it.  I like the contacting a church or social services idea.  I hope she gets the help she needs and you get some relief.  Bless you for caring.

Is there some social worker or some one that you can report her house condition to?  Or maybe the bldg complex?  That is really unhealthy and the roaches could get in other apts too.   Maybe she needs a home health aide and some social group in her area...

She does sound like she really needs help. Maybe if she gets the help she needs she will stop bothering others? Does she go to church....when she is mentioning her religion? You maybe could call her pastor and maybe they could do something to help her...or social services. Good luck to you...I sure wouldn't want someone at my door every day!

The next time she starts talking ugly about Jews, remind her that Jesus was a Jew. There's a guy Randy went to college with that is sort of anti-semitic. That's what I tell him. Once he was at our house and started talking that way and I just said, "Whoa, don't wanna hear talk like that in my home. You realize that you are talking about the same race to which our Lord belonged. Don't think you'd better be doing that." That shut him up.
