Oh geez....I'm really trying to cut out all negative influences in my life...and one of my biggest stressors is the mailbox. It's evil in my opinion....nothing good is ever in it. I pay my bills online..and haven't gotten a "letter" in years. So I tend to go a little while without checking it. No need.

So just a little bit ago I figured it's been a while and I should probably empty it out. Took a few swigs of an adult beverage and got brave. Drove to the mailbox station, opened up my little box...and there was NO MAIL in there.

It all got sent back. Must have been longer then I thought since I last checked it I guess. So great...tomorrow I'm going to have to drive to the post office and stand in line with a number and collect my mail.

So what should my excuse be? Last time I said I was in Europe for a month...so I can't use that excuse again. My mail-guy knows me and lectured me last time about if I go to Europe then put a "hold" on the mail delivery.  So what do I say? Should I just tell them the truth about my mailbox phobia?

You lost your mailbox key and just found it? You've had a family illness/emergency? I hate to use that excuse because I'm afraid karma will really make someone in my family ill. Your son was the one who was supposed to check it and he's been at his dad's house?

I used to be the same way when I had to go to a mail-box station. You don't owe them an explaination. Just collect your mail, smile and wave good-bye. They work for you. This is why we pay postage, besides, this is unsolicited mail you are receiving. Mostly junk anyway, right?

I agree with Debra---it's really none of their business why you haven't been there. You don't "OWE" them an explanation.

Just wear a dark wig and dark sunglasses, and go pick up your mail!

Its not the mailbox that irratates me its all the junk.  I have a system however.  I tend to check the mail every day and just sift out the junk in the recycle bin that is next to the mailboxes and only take with me what is important.  Imagine me standing by the mailbox reading the mail--sounds silly but this way there is less mess in the house to shuffle around.

I really encourage ebilling, its great!  If you want to mail me a bill, you can count on it getting lost in my house--im not that great at filing stuff.  Course with my job, i have heard every excuse in the book!

If you have a secure mailbox... I'm wondering what gives them the "right" to send your mail back?? Was it so full there wasn't room for more?? At home I have a regular mailbox with a door that anyone could open... but I also have a PO box through the USPS that I pay annually for my business... and I don't always check it often, unless I know something is coming (most activity is done online) and they have never taken my mail away!  Is your box through the US Postal Service... or someone else? Just seems like you should be able to tell them that your mail is to be left in your box UNTIL you are ready to pick it up!!

I think that when you get the mail, you should stand in a location so that the postal employees can see you. Sort through your mail and TOSS everything that is junk into their trashcan!

Nat, you crack me up!
Just go in and ask for your mail. No excuses necessary. And then do what Trina said, toss everything that you don't want to keep... you'll have less mess in your house when you get home. LOL

https://www.directmail.com/directory/mail_preference/?ref=G is a link to a free national Do Not Mail list, kind of like the Do Not Call lists you can use to stop telemarketers.
