Don't give up hope Jan. Just don't run the vacuum for awhile and crawl over ever square foot of your floor & carpet in that room, gently running your hands over the carpet surface. You're more apt to feel it before you see it.
When I was still working in an office a coworker's diamond fell out of her set. She just looked down at her hand one morning and the stone was GONE! She was sure it fell in the office as she had noted the rings earlier at her desk and thought they needed cleaning. She was frantic and after 3 days of not finding it, she was so very upset. Then, one morning about a week later, as I entered my office, I saw a sparkle in the hinge corner of the door on the carpet. THERE IT WAS! They vacuumed the offices every night, but it had fallen where the vacuum just couldn't get. We decided she must have knocked it against the door frame while she was standing in my office doorway talking to me earlier that day.
She was sooooo grateful I had found it and her demeanor towards me (which had been somewhat strained as I was in a higher position and had gotten several promotions with less experience in the office than she) improved greatly after this event.
