Chase hurt his back foot really bad, so much so he could not
put pressure on it, if he did he would fall over.
The Wife and I took him to the Vet, it turns out he had a really bad sprain, so the Vet give him medicine for it.
We took him home and Sandy my wife give him the new meds, about 10
minutes later so she comes running in and stated, that she gave him one of
pain meds for her back and if we do not do something fast it could kill him.
So she is on the phone with the Vets and they are no help, they
transfer the call over to an animal hospital that told us we have to induce vomiting.
We gave him two teaspoons full of peroxide and this allowed him to throw
up everything in is stomach including the pill which was wrapped
in bologna meat
Poor thing was throwing up for like 5 minutes straight, after that he was tired but ok thank God.
Sandy was really shaken and started to cry after he was out of danger, she knew she mess up big time by giving him the wrong meds
I think what save his life was a number of factors.
1) The fact that my wife caught it real fast and was on the phone getting help ASAP.
2) The pill was wrapped in bologna meat and had not yet been digested.
3) The Animal hospital giving us to correct info on how to induce vomiting
4) Having peroxide in the house.
This was a hard lesson to be learned big time for us last night. I did not know giving a dog peroxide would help them to vomit like it did, I think every household who has a dog should peroxide on hand just encase of events like this happens where you have induce vomiting quickly.
Thanks
Tom

I would have completed freaked out, too. Glad everything turned out ok in the end and that he's ok.
Here is an older link to a thread containing information on inducing vomiting with peroxide.
I think it's a good idea to have a bottle on hand and to print out the dosage requirements on a label and stick it to the bottle so you don't have to look it up when in a panic.

Tracey, this post used to be "pinned" in the Health Forum, could we please get it pinned again? Very important info there and when someone is panicking from a dog eating the wrong thing they need to find the info fast! Also, a good idea to print out and tape to fridge. Pun - did your wife give him the wrong pill on purpose? Does she now understand not to give him human pills unless the vet says it's ok???? |

No it was purely on accident, what has happen she placed Chase's pills in her purse and she had her pills already in her purse, thinking she was pulling out his pills, of course she should have looked at the label and she took out her pills and did realize she was giving him the wrong meds, until she went back into her purse and found his meds and counted them and noticed all of his pills were there, this was about 10 mins later after giving him the pills.
She was rushing to give him the meds for his foot that she gave him the wrong ones.
She loves both of them to much to hurt them on purpose..

Thanks, That Chelsea our other Ratti, she smiles when I catch her doing something she should not be, this is a pic of her when she was up on the bed, I have a Digital SRL camera that allows to take close to 10-15 pics in a min and I was snapping away until I got the pic I wanted.
She just started to smile on her own...

Whew. Glad everything is OK. It could have happened to anyone. I accidentally OD'd my own skin kid on cold meds once. Luckily, poison control told me it wouldn't hurt her. It just made her a little "drunk." But I was scared stupid!! Once you do it, you always double and triple check to see if what you're giving them is correct!!! Its amazing how much a little peroxide makes a dog yak, isn't it??! |
