when you see a stray dog in your neighborhood? I never know the right thing to do....do I pick the dog up and take it where? Do I call police or animal warden? do I make a flyer or knock on doors? I seen a dog running around our neighborhood on my way back from lunch, I konw it sounds terrible but I had to get back to work so I didn't stop. I DID call the animal warden and give the dogs description and location. If I had more time I would have tried to get him in my car and bring him somewhere. What do you all do if you encounter a stray? If my dogs got out I would want someone to call animal warden and get them to a shelter since they are chipped. I guess this is what I do when I see a stray dog but I think I should be doing more...............

I saw a dog the other day running down the street. Looked like a cute poodle mix. I turned around to get it but it ran off into the woods. I was going to see if it would come to me. If it did I would have checked for tags and if it had none, called my vet to have it scanned to see if there was a chip. Otherwise I am not sure what I would have done. Possible put it on Craigslist in lost and found and called the humane league to see if anyone was looking. Not sure what I would do after I did all that. lol

One time there is a stray dog in my neighborhood, somebody called the police and they contacted the animal control. They had a hard time catching her since this dog is so smart, it took them days to catch her. In the mean time when I take Daxter for a walk in the morning and night I always look for her and feed her, he follow us around and play a bit with my dog, but she is so smart, she just get close enough but not to close that you are able to pet her. Until one morning when I was looking for her and I didn't see her, turn out she walk into the trap looking for food. Poor dog, she was so scared in there. I still wonder what happened to her, they told me which shelter they bring her in but I can't find her profile on their website, so could be 2 thing, she got return to her owner or she got PTS since the security was saying she is so vicious to the police. I still missed her though she is such a great dog and during those time that she is loose on the street I got attached to her. It's like my morning ritual to feed her and when I don't see her I am kind of dissapointed like something is missing.

The dog at lunch had no tags at all, I did look. If it had tags then i would have gotten out to call the owners. With no tags, having to get back to work and not knowing if it was mean (it was a boxer size) I just called the warden. I just hope it' snot going to be outside at night here as it's getting cold. I guess driving away I wondered if what I was doing was enough or right. sigh

If a dog has no tags, better to let animal control get it. It could be scared and attack, it could be vicious and attack, it could have any number of diseases. Let the people with the nets and the training do their work.

knowing me, in my mind I would know that it would be best to let the warden take care of the situation. But I would take the dog. I almost had this exact same thing happen to me this summer. I was at work and there was a dog with no tags on outside our office. Me and a co-worker (who has 5 basset hounds) called the dog and it came right to us. We held on to him trying to find something to tie him up with so he didnt get hit. I was going to take him home, but the owner drove by and stopped and got him. I was going to bring him home and put him in our outside kennel and put up fliers.

We never see strays around here, cats or dogs, anymore. There are two reasons for this, I think. We used to get strays. Reason there are no stray dogs: Because my idiot neighbors often don't restrain their dogs in any way, so they chase off any dogs that get near us... this is the same reason I never get to walk my dogs very far... there are loose dogs that live in every direction from my house, so you don't feel safe. Reason there are no stray cats: We think have coyotes. I've never seen one. I don't think they come near our houses, but I think stray cats wander close to them... I know, I know, having even an outdoor cat could be dangerous because of that, but, I also figure that if he sticks around our 3 acres, he's not as likely to get eaten anyway. I wish we saw stray cats-- a few years ago our indoor/outdoor cat Lionel was hit by a car and my mom decided only indoor cats from now on... But we live in the country and had no idea how many mice our cat had been keeping from getting inside. Plus, there is something wonderful about being outside and having the cat come up and keep you company, like while my mom is gardening or I'm reading or something. And so I've kind of been half-secretly wishing a stray cat would come to our house. Because we could feed it... when it trusted us, take it to the vet and get it fixed/shots... and give it a dry place to sleep in the garage... And not feel bad b/c it lives outdoor, because we'd be giving it a better life than it had, giving it food and a territory... We saw a stray kitten two years ago... we put out food for it. I'd do the same if I saw a stray nowadays... if it sticks around I'd then decide what to do next, but most of the time, they're too frightened and eat and move on... but at least they're that much farther from starvation.

We rarely see a stray here, most of the dogs that happen by are neigbors. Once a boston terrier came to my door, she had a name tag with a phone number, which was answered by a grateful neighbor a few streets over. Her teen son had let her out to potty, then forgot to let her back in, so she came to visit us. DH says that word must have spread, because a lot of neighborhood dogs come to us if they get out. Heck, some years ago, I opened my front door and there was a PIG standing there (not a common occurence in a residential neighborhood in So. Cal). I did put up flyers, and Polly the pig went home with her family that same day. But everyone should be cautious, many stray dogs have their survival instincts on hyperdrive, and it's best to let professionals handle them. We also have two feral cats that hang out in the neighbor's yard, we call them Brother One and Brother Two. They like to nap on our deck!
