The reason I ask is I"m trying to convince myself that it is okay to have just the one Rattie. So I would really appreciate hearing your reasons for keeping just one dog. How do you resist the cute little faces or the pleas of a homeless Ratty?

I feel guility at times when Bijou wants to go out in the yard but I don't have the time or the will to join her, she won't stay out by herself. Or I am on the computer doing some work for the Humane Society or Ratbone Rescues and she wants to play. It's then that I begin thinking it would be great if she had a playmate. On the other hand I've get mornings like this morning when Bijou and I slept late and then just snuggled in bed for another 30 minutes. I don't know how common it is for this breed to be so accomodating. She will sleep as late as I want and just does not get into any trouble I swear. She is darn near perfect!

Never had a dog like her before and if all Ratties are like this then I want a half- dozen. LOL

That's my baby girl, Bijou! She's a Toy Rat Terrier.

We have one, Hendryx, and that will continue. Hendryx is perfectly happy, he's not a particularly gregarious dog.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Well, I had just one for about a year. I think it is just fine to have just one. Ratties are very adaptable and I bond closely with their humans, so I think having one is not a problem. I will say though, once we got a second one, life got much easier. Vino had someone to run outside with and for those days where things were just crazy or I didn't get home until late...I didn't worry so much about him. They really do keep each other company. Also, now I have *2* babies to snuggle and sleep in with. We have done that for the last two mornings.

There is nothing better than wine and chocolate!

Well we had Bailey for over 2 years by himself. Then we bred him and got two of his puppies. I love Chance and Sydney very much but it is totally ok to have just one. Once you get more you can never go back to the old way of you just having one. Trust me their is never ever a dull moment around my house. I do not need an alarm system because I have them hehe. They bark at the ice dropping in the freezer. Just do what you think is best if you are ready get one....if not just love your one rattie with all of your heart Good luck

Yogi's been the Main Dawg for a year now...and I've been his  numero uno"playmate"...ARRGH!

Have had to set up play dates for him with other dogs so he'll cut ME a break!!

Since "Rosey-Rescue" has been here, he has had all the playtime his little heart has desired...and I've actually been able to get some work done (he hates to see me on the computer and always nose-pushed and pawed me to play)...But now Rosey's his victim...LOL! (BUT...Being the female she is, she takes no prisoners when she's had it with him.) I am LOVING it...free at last!!! HAHA!

So  am planning to adopt.....take the pack up a notch. (ONE notch only! LOL!)

Yogi will thank me for it I am sure.

I only have one also that's because I think Daxter prefer to be the only dog in the house so he gets all my love and attention ha ha ha

I am toying with the idea of having the 2nd one but knowing he doesn't like to play with other dog, I think I have to put a hold on that idea.

I am happy with just be with him, we cuddle and sleeps in on weekend, he such a mellow dog and easy maintenance. I don't have to entertain him, pretty much he is a couch potato sleeps all day. He is a good alarm though make me feels safe living by myself even when I open the balcony door at night!

I have one she is my shadow, with me 24-7 when I am home......(laying next to me now sleeping) ......she is jealous of our cat Squeaky, my kids, my husband.....anyone who comes near me she jumps right up on my lap.  She sleeps with me only, has to cuddle up by my stomach

She is a wonderful dog and has been since day 1 (8 weeks old when we got her).  Training was outstanding, she is the smartest and the best dog I have ever had

I would love to get another in about a year or two (really thinking about it) but I really dont know how she will be........she needs my attention 24-7.  So maybe when she gets alittle older she will be ok with another addition.

If I knew for one minute they would be awesome like her (training) I would get 5 more

Pepper would love to have another dog to play with, but at the same time, I love her being my pup. I think I would loose some of that closeness if there were 2 of them. She loves being around other dogs, but I just can't do it right now. I will reconsider it when there's gonna be a baby around the house, to combat the jealousy, but for now, it's her and I. Daddy's out of town, and it's a lot to have 2 dogs and me working a lot.

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies, they are very helpful.

I'm sure Bijou would react positively to another dog cause she goes nutso (in a good way) when we encounter dogs her size. Yesterday while shopping we met another Rattie and a Boston Terrier and she nearly broke my arm trying to get near them. I finally approached the owners and asked if Bijou could meet their dogs. It was the highlight of her day.

I've thought about doing the "play dates" thing, but not sure how much of a response I'll get in my little community. People just don't seem to be as up on these things in small rural towns like mine. I might put up a flyer at the vet clinic to see what happens. If I could find her one or two little dogs to meet up with once or twice a week I would be satisfied with that I think. I just feel as though I am depriving her of something she needs to be a happy dog. I wish she could talk and tell me what she would like. LOL

Oh man Tammie I am SO righ there with you. Yaz is an only dog. I REALLY want to get another so she will have a friend. We have been so lucky with her. Once we got past the initial puupy stage she has been so easy to care for. If we get another, what will we be getting ourselves into? I am OBSSESSED! I am constantly looking at dogs online. I just don't know.

Ratties are very adaptable. We had Nibbler by himself since we got him, then he had a friend for a few months. When Fry passed away Nibbler was alone again and has been ok. We're looking for another pup soon though.

I only have one. Lucy is very, very possessive of me but I really do struggle with getting a second one. She likes playing with most other dogs and I love watching her do that. However, all the playing stops when one of the other puppies comes near me. Then she won't leave my side. But after seeing all the new puppies here, I keep thinking about it.

Yogi will ALWAYS be my little heart dog...and he KNOWS it.  He also defers to Rosey..lets her cuddle with me, kiss me, etc.

Then....he snuggles up with me or invites me to play, and it's like he is the ONLY one!

Even tho she is always there..he is the MAIN DAWG.

I only have Kenzie right now We'll see how long that lasts thought!! My fiance and I have talked about getting another, especially after seeing how well she plays with other dogs at the dog park (as long as they are smaller than her, bigger ones she gets really timid) but for now she's the one and only. I'm only allowed to have one here at the apartment but...

While we have two in the household, I only have one dog. When I move out (I'm a 22 y/o living w/her parents) just Sophie is coming with me...

I'd love to get another dog, or even a cat, but a) right now Sophie has those in my parents pets and b) I figure since I can't afford my own place now, I probably won't be able to afford it w/o a roommate later. And if my roommate is okay with pets, chances are she'll have one of her own.

And if I get to get married first, then I might be moving to the UK, and getting one animal over there is hard enough! lol. He might move here though...

BUT I totally feel you about wanting to get little doggie friends for your dog! Yes, Sophie has Radar, but we live in the middle of nowhere, and the dogs rarely get to go anywhere-- occassionally they tag along to the feedstore. But no one walks their dogs here. And while we have a Petsmart and a Petco in the county, it's far enough away that with the price of gas we NEVER go to petsmart JUST to go to petsmart and come home-- if I need something there, say dog shampoo, it's one stop of three or four before we go home-- and aside from Petco and Petsmart there are not any other animal friendly businesses around here... except one Goodwill, but it's way far out of the way. So the last time Radar went to petsmart was.... maybe six years ago? And I've not gotten to take Sophie there...

So Radar only has a dog friend in Sophie, and is not really well dog socialized-- he pulls and huffs and sometimes barks and growls when he sees strange dogs. Sophie, on the other hand, was adopted to me well dog socialized-- and I'd like to keep her that way!! But even though I tried to explain this to my parents so they will let me have dog outings (I don't have a car of my own), my mom was so offended that I thought Radar wasn't well socialized, she didn't get past that part. Grr..

And a friend of mine has a chihuahua and a chihuahua/dachshund mix and I'd like to get them all together for a playdate-- but because she's got small dogs, they've never been trained on a leash! She just puts them in carriers to take them to the vet, and doesn't really take them anywhere else. So we can't just meet in a park somewhere. (Dog parks are too far away to be generally feasible around here). And she lives with her parents too, and her parents have six dogs of their own and that's too many for Sophie, you know?

Sigh.

Fredo is our one and only. We do have 3 cats as well but all but one are primarily outside cats and we hardley ever see them in the summer. We are toying with the idea of getting possibly an older rescue (Rattie of course) but will probably wait until next spring if we do.

The battery on the invisible fence collar for our neighbor's pug seems to have given up the ghost again. He followed Hendryx around the yard, and Hendryx was polite to him until he tried to follow Hendryx through the doggy door. I've never seen a dog do the pug 500 before, but Hendryx demonstrated how to motivate one.

We had one dog (fred) a little over a year before bringing Alice home. It was cool having one dog, it was more mellow for Fred that's forsure. We were nervous brining Alice into our home but we had to or she would have been PTS. Anyway life with 2 is so much more exciting and fun for Fred. Watching the 2 of them interact, we can't play with Fred the was Alice does or vice versa. They are buddies and I think it's so much easier with 2. They have each other while we work all day. They will sleep in as long as I want them too also LOL, both of them!!
