Gonna sound TOTALLY cynical here, but is anybody surprised? They're politicians... they only care about their own agendas and how to make themselves richer... while we, the tax payer, foots the bill... as serious as I know this situation is, I'm sick of hearing about it because NOTHING will change..... I grew up up in a political family and I HATED it....

No telling how much I could save a year just cutting out doing that except for special occasions. NO! I cannot advise you strongly enough not to mow your own grass, especially if you are one of the customers of my hubby's lawn service business. We need to pay our bills too.

Lance is doing what he can for ya, Pam. He hires the front and sides mowed (largest part of the pie) and does the back yard (small slice of the pie) himself to cut down on the cost. Does that earn us a few brownie points? After all, he wants to do what he can for the economy!!!

Well, I tuned in to the tail end of Bill OReilly last night and he said there was absolutely no money for ACORN tacked on to this bill. He says there was NO money in the original bill earmarked for ACORN. I stand corrected. Wish I could remember which news network I was watching when I heard that. Since I usually only watch CNN, Headline News and Fox News, it had to be one of those. Bad thing to be misinforming the public on, whichever network it was. Just wanted to clarify that point from my earlier post. The vote just came in on the second version and the House passed the second bill the Senate drafted. It has passed once and for all.

The little boy on our block mows our lawn for $10.00 a week, front and back bagged and to the curb. I hope he doesn't go out of business!!

You know what REALLY irritates me? When the smiley rich television people do a "save money" segment where they tell you not to have starbucks everyday and and to take public transportation. They ALWAYS say that too... Seriously, I have starbucks maybe five-ten times a year as a HUGE treat... and feel guilty as crap for the indulgance... And as my mom says "Sure, sure I'll take the bus... I'll drive my car fifteen miles to the nearest bus station, park my car in a bad neighborhood" (b/c the nearest bus station is in a bad neighborhood, not because all bus stations are) "and then take the bus for the next five miles which will take half an hour, and then take it back in the afternoon and if the car hasn't been stripped for parts, drive it home"... Or when Dr. Phil, who I typically this is okay, got really emphatic about financial issues saying that no one needs two cars that they should just ride the bus. Um.... hello?? My mom has a forty five minute commute, about 20 miles (more like 17 actually), to the north, M-F 10-6 My dad has a thirty minute commute, about 20 miles to the east, M 1-9, W 7-4, Th 7-4, F 1-10, S 7-4 Sure, they'll ride a bike. And we have been forced to do the one car thing-- not only do they not get any sleep, but it uses twice the gas to have drive one parent to work, drive back, drive to work, pick up other parent, drive home... etc... Some of these rich Hollywood people have forgotten the fact that tons of Americans don't live in the city.

I think at the beginning of this thread the question was whether this whole thing came out of the blue. The answer is no, anyone could and should have seen this coming. And the popular show solutions are just plain bogus (as has been pointed out). Politicians don't have to solve problems, they just have to look like they're solving problems. In the end, this is yet another business cycle. They come every 5 - 10 years, end in a bust, everybody runs in circles, the politicians run around squawking and clucking, they claim that they've plugged the loopholes, somebody comes up with a new idea for making money, it grows and grows, the early adopters get rich, the late adopters climb on the bandwagon and get surprised when it blows up in their faces, the politicians run around squawking and clucking, and so it goes. Here is a short story, maybe apocryphal. One of the more successful women in finance in the 1920s came home from the Hamptons on Sunday, October 27, 1929. There had been an initial stock fall the Thursday before, but things looked like they were going to stabilize. As she was in the elevator going up to her floor in the apartment house where she lived, the elevator operator (this is the 1920s, few automatic elevators) told her that the stock market was a sure bet and that things would be better than ever. When she got to her apartment, she called her broker's home number and told him to sell every stock that she owned first thing Monday morning. If even her elevator operator was giving stock advice, it was time to bail out of the stock market. Tuesday, October 29, 1929 is known as Black Tuesday - the Dow Jones didn't reach it's pre Black Tuesday level until 1954.
