Sorry this may sound stupid... But what is a soup bone? Our vet told us any bone that could splinter or if peices could break off are not good. The only one he reccomended was a knuckle bone.

would a soup bone be like a chicken bone? I bet that would be yummy, but I don't think chicken bones are good for dogs... but I'm not sure. This is a good question though, I've always wondered what kind of bone I could give Mic when we're cooking something yummy

Erica, what's a knuckle bone?

im not totally sure what they are, I know when I worked at a grocery store people would tell me they were buying them for their dogs... you can get them at the grocery store for about $1 and you get 2 pretty good sized ones.... some people use them to flavor soup too...

Im not really sure what part they are but they are pretty big knobby bones. You can find them at most petstores some are even flavored. They are a little big for my two but they still love them and they seem to last forever.

I will go see if I can find an example online.

They might be okay but I would take it away before any pieces break off.

knuckle bones, huh... I can't believe I never saw those. I bet Mic would like em! And those soup bones, if they still had meat on them I bet Mic would die for one of those! But are they good with raw meat still on them? I would love to try one out for that price...

Soup bones would be a large bone, like a ham hock.  When I worked for the vet, that particular vet was VERY AGAINST any bone.  All bones can splinter and he did not like the idea of feeding any sort of bone.

Molly loves her knuckle bone. It lasts forever. It keeps her from chewing on everything else in the house and lasts longer than stuffed toys.

"Soup bones" are usually the same thing as knuckle bones, with enough red meat still on them to flavor soup stock.  The worst thing about them is letting them lay around too long if the dog doesn't clean all the meat off of them in a hurry---they start to smell like rotten meat!  But they DON'T splinter.

Maybe not -- I don't know -- I just know that Dr. Thornton didn't like any bones and I've just never given my dogs any. But, Paul, you have lots of dog experience and so perhaps he just made that a standard rule so that people wouldn't buy the wrong type of bone. My guess is that is why he said no bones period.

I think a lot of vets are against feeding anything raw, (there's a vet clinic in Portland that will don gloves, surgical masks, etc. if they find out your pet is being fed raw) and cooked bones splinter, so therefore they might say no bones at all.

Soup or knuckle bones from the grocery store are awesome, BUT DOGS MUST BE GIVEN RAW BONES ONLY!!  Any cooked bone can splinter. Not all raw bones are safe either, the large beef thigh bones are hard enough to break your dogs teeth. I think they're also called marrow bones. I believe the best bones for recreational chewing are the knuckle bones.  The huge end piece of the marrow bone that connects the thigh to the hip, or thigh to knee.  The knuckles I get in the meat department look to me like they've been cut, as they are about the size and shape of a pork chop. Occasionally I'll get lucky and find the whole knuckle, which is roughly the size of Oscar's head, if not larger. It's a pleasure to watch them work on them (and you should watch them) and know that they are scrubbing their teeth clean at the same time.       I limit my guys time with the bones to about two hours at a time, as they do actually eat the bones little by little.  I put them back in the freezer afterwards and I watch Lucky's poop for a few days to make sure it's worked thru his system. (his poop turnes white)

Raw chicken bones are fine too but I believe they are fed more for food as part of a raw diet than for fun time chewing.

I just gave Yogi his first raw bone, it was from the pet store and is some kind of lamb bone. I cannot get him to chew on ANYTHING, rawhide, too hard of treats, etc. but he gave it a go with the bone but lost interest after 5 minutes (got upset when I took it away after 15, so I gave it back and he walked away). I will try again later (stuck it back in the freezer) and let it sit out longer, I wasn't sure if it was okay for more then a few minutes at a time so I'm glad you posted how long you let them have it for.

How often do you give your dogs the knuckle bones, ski?

I am just excited he chewed on something! His teeth are terrible, he only has about half left and had one removed last month. I brush them with gauze and toothpaste for now but he won't let me for very long so am glad he will chew on these a little bit!

that's what I was wondering....having icky raw meat/raw bone laying around the house...and mine would hide it in the couch cushions!  I think I'll pass on that.

I buy the bones about every 10-14 days or so. When they first get them, Lucky eats about half of a nearly one pound bone,  I take them away and refreeze them. After their poop returns to normal, I let them have them again. After the second time, Lucky's bone is usually too small so I throw it away.

And as for MB's concerns, I definately make the bone thing an outdoor event, at least until they gnaw any meat off the bone.

Watch out for your feet! We are basically a bare foot clan and stepping on bones hurts like crazy! (Almost as bad as stepping on leggos or hot wheels cars!) Daughter #1 works for a meat department of a grocery store and cuts the knuckle bones (beef knee or hip joints is what I'm told) bones special for Shiloh (who she swears she doesn't like due to her being a panty thief! LOL) I let her have them until she has all the red gone and then they disappear never to be seen again... What a mean Mommy I am... I agree though, this is an outside thing only. Unless you don't mind trash smell in your house, that's something I'd recommend for the out-of-doors only times.

i just had the meat cutter take off all the meat so it was only bone... they didn't smell, and Macie knows not to chew her bones on the furniture..
