Just thought I'd pop in with a quick hello.
Adam, Nibbler and I fared well from Hurricane Ike. We got some water in our apartment, but we are truly blessed to be here.
What they are reporting on the news is not true. It is much, much worse than that. They presume that about 5,000 people in Galveston alone are dead. Houses are completely devestated everywhere, including my town. Half of my grandpa's neighborhood was underwater. At least three people in Baytown have died. FEMA kept not showing up until today. It's be a mess.
They have yet to let people into some of the worse parts. I could go on, but it's so frustrating that the news is only giving half the story to people who really need it. Most people have a hard time getting cell phone reception due to FEMA taking over the towers, and most phone/power lines are down in our area.
Others in this area, I hope and pray that you guys are safe and sound!

On a better note, we took a "Hurrication" to the country to get away from the heat and what not. Our little Nibbler (who was afraid of carpet for two months, mind you) stood up to a big cow trampling his way. So proud of him. He loves the country (and so do we).

OMG! That means whole families died. How horrible. I have some family down that way. Cousins of my mom. She talked to one, that said her and her mom's houses were destroyed. They were not there when the storm came through, because o a dr's appt in Centerville, the day of the storm, and were already having a house built up there. This is as bad, or worse than Katrina. It is just unbelievable in this day and age of technology, that more people did not get out, unless it was just a matter of not having enough money, because of our lousy economy. I don't know though, if I had children in that situation, I would have gotten out of there. As we have here in Florida, a couple of times.

I agree with Donna... why didn't more people leave when asked to do so? I don't understand, and it saddens me to know that so many didn't make it. Bonita... it's good to *see* you and glad you and yours are all doing well.

Glad you are ok Bonita and was real nice to see you on here!

I was wondering how you faired, Bonita. So glad you and yours came through it OK.

I suspect you're right about the damages being much worse that media have been showing. I figured there had to be a reason they weren't showing pics in the old downtown area and in the residential areas immediately around it, where my friend's house is. Usually after storm they use the press conferences to inform the citizens of how each district on the island faired with regards to damage. This time they haven't really done that, so I figured they might be withholding the actual fatality numbers.

But about the fatalities, I'm not sure the officials are holding back info. Remember, according to media, they only brought in ONE portable refrigerated morgue truck, so hopefully the death count is not anticipated to be as high that. And as they have no power island-wide, they would not be able to use a building as a temp morgue as none have electricity to cool bodies. Though County Judge Jim Yarborough (one of Lance's former students) said they do expect the death toll to rise on Bolivar Peninsula once debris can be cleaned up. He told a funny story at his press conference. Said a long time resident of Crystal Beach owned a basically tame tiger. Both are unaccounted for and Jim said the tiger has "got to be getting hungry" (Jim always did have a great sense of humor). Went on to say "and I have a couple of commissioners........Just Kidding". LOL They have zoo specialists out looking for any signs of the tiger. Personally, I hope the tiger is with Daddy and "on his leash". LOL

If the Galveston hospital took on 4' of water, that's just 2 blocks from my friend's house. That is the lowest part of the island (after the west end). That area gets water not from the beach, but from surge/backwash in the bay/channel. It's NOT looking good for recovery in Galveston only lasting weeks/months as it usually does, IMHO. I think recovery will be more like YEARS! Almost a mini Katrina, in other words, since so MUCH of the city infrastructure is gone. I think we're gonna see a lot of permanent relocations. My best friend of 40+ years vows she is selling both her Galveston and League City homes and both grown sons are doing the same just as soon as they can do so. They've had it. She has lived down there since 1968, and that's no easy decision.

The people who didn't evacuate were the ones who were vowing to stay no matter what. I know that several school buses from up here in north Texas were sent down there to transport people to shelters, so even the poorest people had somewhere to go and a way to get there.

I don't mean to sound callous and uncaring. I really do feel badly for the people who lost loved ones and their homes.

Yeah, Pam, I won't type the diatribe here I posted on SE-RT about how I really feel about peoplel who chose to stay and ride storms out. Suffice it to say that if people would DO what they are told, GET OUT, lay in 3-5 days of NON-PERISHABLE food (no ice needed), and water, they would not inflict the unnecessary suffering on themselves and rescue workers that they do again and again. I'll stop there and not climb all the way up on that soap box. Having lived on the island 20 years and Texas City another 15, this is a real sore subject with me. My heart always goes out to people suffering losses, but it gets harder and harder to be sympathetic when people continue to take no personal responsibility for their and their family's safety. You'd think long-time coastal residents would LEARN SOMETHING from each of their storm experiences! Sadly, some never do and never will, I guess. In the meantime, taxpayers, as always, pick up the tab for their poor decisions.

Ya'll will all be glad to know the Crystal Beach owner of the tiger was found taking shelter in the Crystal Beach Baptist Church with his LION.  The TIGER was found elsewhere on the Bolivar peninsula and they have captured it now, too.  Whew!  Apparently he runs a mini-zoo over there.  As if people don't have enough to worry about in a hurricane.
