These are two things that actually happened at Ikea yesterday.

A man tried to return a lamp that he'd had for a while because he knocked it off the table and broke the glass globe.  Why should Ikea warranty that?

Another man tried to return a bookcase that he'd had in a storage unit for a year because rats got to it and gnawed on it.  Again, why should a store warranty that?

Am I just nuts or are these people?  BTW, I've applied for a transfer to the reception/phone operator position.  Y'all keep your fingers crossed for me!

No doubt those people are nuts, but I bet they're thinking - if they don't try, they'll never know if Ikea would take it back.... I worked at K-Mart while in college, and people tried to return stained and ripped clothes as brand new... it was unbelievable what these people tried to get away with...

Good luck on the transfer!  But remember, wackos can use phones, also!!

my mom works clothing retail and people try to return worn outfits with no tage and worn shoes... i mean deoderant marks, sweat marks the whole 9 so you know they are worn dresses and shoes whose soles are worn and got good use... and they have receipts from 1 yr plus ago... and expect it to be refunded/exchanged...

Yeah, but you can hang up on them!    Plus, I wouldn't be standing for a 4-8 hour shift or having to lift heavy items.

As a former operator for Sprint (and I've also worked in retail) people on the phone are far crazier and ruder than people in person. It's like they think you can't strangle them over the phone so they can be ruder. At Sprint we were not allowed to hang up or be rude back to customers at all or we were in danger of getting written up and ultimately fired. Even if some perv called and was talking unspeakables to us we had to ask them at least 3 times to refrain from doing that before we could disconnect.

But I hope your situation is different.

I absolutely could not work the return counter in any store. My hat is off to you, Pam for hanging in there as long as you have. I hope you get the phone position!

The great thing about dealing with the public on the phone is that no matter how gross they get while speaking, they can't reach through the cord and strangle you.  Back in the Pleistocene when dinosaurs walked the earth and I was still in college, I used make some extra bucks as a car jockey in a garage. I got accused of denting the roof (?), moving things around in the trunk (?!), and changing the setting on a guy's timing belt (wth?!!!!) in addition to the usual collection of nicks on the door (I did my share of them), scratches on fenders (guilty only once), and refusals to hand over the keys to obvious drunks (one pulled a gun on me, but then collapsed in a stupor while I called the cops). I'll take phone abuse any old day to standing face to face with the great unwashed and bad breathed public.

Better check the customer service rules. Where I work, a cable tv company, you can get into trouble for hanging up on people. I have , however hung up on those idiots, who after repeatedly being asked to refrain from  profanity, have gone into a continuos rant of cussing...Thank goodness, I did not get into trouble...

it seems like Costco takes nearly everything back...my brother and SIL have "returned" both a microwave oven that quit working after 3 yrs (and they didn't even buy it at Costco!!), and a printer just 'cause. My SIL is also guilty of wearing a dress and returning it...it still had the tag. I think it's so wrong to return things the way they do...especially clothes after you've worn them all day and didn't wash. Once you've worn them, they are yours.

I had a couple of people yesterday who told me they were going to yell at me for denying their return because they knew I was just following the rules; however, they did want me to get my manager down there to yell at them. I appreciated that.

Pam, I feel your frustration.... I'm the manager at Victoria's Secret, and let me tell you , I have had to deal with some very entertaing returns in my day.

I had a woman the other day bring backa bra and try and return it because her dog ate it.

I had one try and return a bra that melted in the dryer. ( All of our bras are handwash only) and another that tried to return a bra tat she had on her body after she came from the gym because she didn't like the wires in the bra while she was wroking out. Well, duh, you are not supposed to work out in a push up bra.

So I feel for you Pam, hope you get a chance to play with the crazies on the phone soon.

The only thing that I can say is the only time of year that beats your story is after Christmas......

People wanting to return clothes that they said did not fit and the ones they were trying to return were old and ragged and they were wearing the new ones and still had the stickers on the leg or arm.......

Putting something old into a box of someting new and thinking to get away with it........and they do not even look alike......Been there done that.....never goiing back.........
