I'm so sorry you've been in so much pain.  I'm guessing that they want to see if there's any torn ligaments or tendons, or any joint damage...things that don't usually show up on a traditional x-ray.

http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/magnetic-resonance-imaging-mri

the dr's had wanted to do an MRI on my dad for all of his health issues this past year, but since he has a pace maker, they couldn't do it...MRI's use a strong magnet and if you have anything metal  inside you, it could cause harm.

let the tech or whoever does it know that...they will be able help you calm down. my mom is VERY claustrophobic and she was able to have it done (several yrs ago)...they are more open now than the older machines.

They also frequently give you headphones and such so that you can listen to music while the machine does its thing.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

I had to have one done on my knee a couple years ago. The machine is very loud, because it bounces sound waves. You cannot breath or move while it is taking pictures. They will tell you when to breathe. You just have to hold your breathe a few seconds, each time. It was hard not to move, because they had me hold my leg sideways. You cannot have any metal, on you either, because of electromagnetics going on. You cannot feel anything, it is just loud, even with earphones, on.

Nope, no jewelry of any kind. Good luck, sure hope they can figure out what is causing your pain. What about that restless leg syndrome that I see on tv all the time now???

Christi,
I had an MR a few years ago and am so claustrophobic I cannot go into closets or clean under my bed.....The doctor suggested valium for me but I said no and then he suggested Benadryl....if you can take it just check with your doc and take what he tells you a few hours before going......You lay on a sliding table and they slide you in up to your belly button or chest......the noise to me sounded like a very bad heavy metal concert....If it was like mine the had pix on the cieling so it was not so bad......the dentist drill was worse.........

No piercings of any kind. Also if you have any tattoos you should  let them know that too. The reason for this is  because tattoos can cause a reaction during an MRI  The tattoo inks that could  cause a reaction are those containing iron oxide (some black, brown, red, flesh, yellow, orange). Not all dyes of these colors contain iron oxide. Also, some dyes of other colors may contain lesser quantities of magnetic metal.

Magnetic metals can convert the radio-frequency pulses of an MRI machine into electricity. The burning sensation that would be felt at the site of the tattoo may be a result of electricity running through the tattoo or from the 'pull' exerted on the magnetic material in the tattoo. So if you have any tattoos that you think might contain iron oxide you need to let your doc know about this.
