Am I the only one that gets really annoyed by the "exam fee" that the vet charges no MATTER WHAT....

I made an appointment for Toa to have his THIRD (and hopefully final) skin scraping for his mange...I am hoping that we are done with the medicine.  I was hoping to just oay for the scraping fee...i dont want anything else...i dont need to know how much he weighs, dont need ya to look in his ears, eyes, etc.....so, the scrape is like 32 bucks and the exam is like 48...i just dont get it....its an ongoing medical issue that they have seen him for 2 other times already...cant i get a break on the exam fee?

dont get me wrong...i LOVE LOVE LOVE my vet, and i guess its worth it, but WHY THE EXAM FEE?

thanks for letting me vent....guess im paying 80 tomorrow at the vet...LOL

yeah, I feel the same way. I like my vets too but sometimes I feel so nickle and dimed. I was even charged an exam fee when I came in to have my Dobie put down. They'd just seen him the week before, they knew his problems. Why the extra $45 and especially on a difficult time for me. I do freelance work on the side and don't charge for every little thing. But I guess I don't have 6 bet techs, etc to pay on top of it either.  IDK.

Is it a follow-up.  Our vet does not charge for follow-ups.  When we had to go back to have Sydney's surgery checked we did not pay.  also when Sonic had a reaction to his distemper shot and we had to go back and get anti-inflammitories there was no charge.  We do have to pay for each time we go in now for the anal check on both.  But, we get one office call($14) and to expressions ($15 each) so the toal bill yesterday was only $44.

could you have them do that as a "tech visit" next time? I do that for my girls when they need their nails clipped or anal glands expressed. it's frustrating anytime you need to take them to the vet for a simple check up...all those fees add up quickly.

I can't imagine why they would continue to charge you a fee every time I have never heard of that....you should say something about it or ask them why they charge evrytime....Thats just CRAZY.....Milly

well... it sstinks to have to pay but as humans we always pay a "visit fee" to get a check up or what have you... its really no different. my vet i must say is unbelievable... you pay the fee ONLY if there is nothing done... if you have to get a scarping or shots or what have you then you pay for that and ONLY THAT! i guess its just to cover their time... my vet does not charge for follow ups at all and if you havea simple visit thats for like 5 mins, in and out... he doesnt charge either!!! I am very fortunate to havea vet like this... that has 3 incredible drs on staff always... and nurses that really care!

Welcome to health care economics 101. The good news is that it can be negotiable. Just because their computer is set up to charge a fee every time you get an appointment, you don't have to be silent about it. If they insist that they charge the same way that plumbers do (here's the sock that your kid shoved in the drain, that'll be $75.), you have to decide whether to stay or seek a different vet.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!
