I took down all the posters in my oldest son's old room and the walls have thousands of pinholes in them!  Anyone know of a good/easy way to fill them before I paint the walls?

I would get some plaster from Home Depot or Lowes.  I think I even heard you can use toothpaste but I've never done it personally so I wouldn't try it....hehe

How to fill nail holes in walls......(I just found this online)

Things You’ll Need:

  • Sawdust
  • White Wood Glue
  • Paper Plate
  • Toothpick
  • Fine Sandpaper
  • Paint (matching the walls)
  • Paintbrush
  • Paint Stirring Stick

Step1
Gather your materials. Most are common household objects, but the others can be found at any hardware store. If you have your own woodworking equipment, you may be able to find plenty of sawdust piled up in the areas where you work. If not, just ask for some sawdust at your hardware store. Bring a small container with you to carry it home.
Step 121
Make a small pile of sawdust on a paper plate. Drizzle a very small amount of white wood glue over the top.
Step 23
Stir the sawdust and glue together with a toothpick. Continue stirring and add more sawdust or glue as needed to get a putty-like consistency. When it starts firming up, you may have to abandon the toothpick and finish mixing it with your fingers.

Step 34

Pinch off small amounts of this putty and push them into your nail holes. Use the toothpick if necessary to completely fill in the holes. Allow each patched hole to dry for at least six hours.

Step 4
Carefully inspect each patched hole. If your patching compound has created a raised bump, sand it down carefully with fine sandpaper until it's smooth with the wall.
Step 56
Open and stir your can of paint. Carefully paint over each patched hole using a small paintbrush. When the paint dries, the area will look as good as new.

i helped my dad "flip" houses and we used spackle, you just put it on with a putty knife and sand it down with a fine grit so that it's smooth (thin coat so you don't have to sand so much) then paint
just wear a respirator mask so you don't breath in the dust. (not that there should be much for just tiny holes, just want to be careful)
i think it should be by the drywall in home depot or something...

Here's a link to what hubby uses... it works very well. Just take a small dab and rub it across the pinhole to fill it in. It dries almost instantly... then go back with some steel wool and sand it lightly so it will blend in with the rest of the wall.

i forgot to add, if your walls have texture and you sand down large areas (enough to ruin the texture) you might have to add more. i think most houses have an "orange peel" texture which you can get in a spray can... hope i helped!

Thanks for all the advice. Dang, now I'll have to start the project...no more using the excuse of not knowing how to fill the holes.

With so many of you mis-reading my subject line, I had to check to make sure I'd typed it right. I will definitely be panting by the time I fill in all those holes in the walls.

If it moves, salute it; if it doesn't, paint it white?

I use pre-mixed plasticized spackle in the little tub - I forget the name but I get it at Home Depot - guaranteed to be paintable and not to shrink.

Well, I wanted to stick in a picture but can't here.  I resolved the holes in the wall issue when my son left home by  using the Hilde method.

I covered the walls (my room now) with dried grasses and leaves which I plastered in place with drywall compound (in the bucket)  Believe me, you will NEVER notice the holes once you have sprays of prairie grass and leaves over the wall.

I liked the dried grass idea! But then my fun thing to do is to slop on the drywall compound and then make pictures in the plaster. I made fish and other water stuff all over the bathroom walls. Jellyfish are fun to make, so is seaweed and anemonies and starfish. Your hands get all gloppy though it washes off well enough. Play in mud! Always fun! Then you have beautifully decorated walls too!
