Yall, I am totally freaking out here by this time. We have mandotory evacuations set for the parish just south of me which includes family members set for Sunday at 8:00AM. A lot of those family members will be coming to my home on Sunday to spend the night and then we are looking at leaving first thing Monday morning to head for Tyler TX to our hotel rooms. The problem is that we can not take the ratties (Molly and Buster) to the hotel. What the heck are we suppose to do? There are NO animal shelters that will take in dogs or cats in my area.  So we are looking at having to leave them in my home while we are gone for 4 days at least.

I know that things can change at last minute but beings we are dealing with mandatory ecacuations we are acting as we see fit. But the ratties are getting lost in the process.

Please don't feed me this business about how storms move at the last minute, I have been through enough to know that. But when your goal is to protect your family wheather it be babies or ratties, you have to have some kind of plan that works. And at this very time I have no plan to protect the ratties.

I don't care if you all think I am crazy for being concerned about a storm that has not made it into the gulf just yet but all of the predictions over the past few days is enough for me to worrry and try and make plans to keep everyone safe.

I still pray and hope that it goes elsewhere but the more it goes the more it looks like we are getting this one. If we do it will not be pretty.

Donna,
Have you checked the Tyler, TX area to see if they might have a shelter or rescue friends that will keep the pups while you are there at the hotel? I'd call the hotel to see if they can give you any numbers. Also check online. I pray that the storm will not hit you guys but I'm with you. If I have to evacuate 100 times and we don't get hit, I'm still evacuating the 101 time.

Wish you could get the pups to me. Good luck and keep us posted as long as you can.

My sympathies.

I hope you can find a better solution, but if you can't: If you have an upper story, leave the dog's food and and water up there so if your house gets flooded they don't get contaminated. If you don't, I'd try to raise them up as high as you can with the ratties still being able to reach it. (I'm thinking something two encyclopedia's high?). If you think you're going to be gone for up to four days, I'd leave a weeks worth of food, in case you underestimated. I know they will probably over eat, but the overeating they'd do in four days can be overcome-- it's chronic overeating that leads to major problems. And I'd leave fresh, clean water everywhere. And as many toys, especiallys ones they like to chew on, as possible, since they won't be able to exercise properly.

I'm sure others will have very practical stuff to tell you, but I've never been through a hurricane. We have had to leave our cat alone for a week, but never a dog. With the cat, we left sinks dripping slightly, so the water was fresh... but as ratties shouldn't be jumping where sinks are... and that cat never overeats. Neither does Radar. Sophie does though. And so does the other cat.

Sorry this is happening to you, and I hope you don't have to leave them alone, maybe you'll find a neighbor who is going somewhere they can take dogs and will look after them until you both come back to the neighborhood?

Oh Donna! What a HORRIBLE situation!

One of my biggest fears is that one day I will be in a mandatory evacuation situation. I couldn't bear the thought of having to leave my precious Snoopy behind.

Am praying for your safety, and that maybe there will be a way that you can take your pups with you, or at least be able to take them somewhere where you know they will be safe.us .

I  can't speak for anyone else. But I certainly do not think your being one bit crazy about this. These kind oif storms are nothing to play around with. Its a shame that the hotel will not let you bring your dogs. You would think they could maybe make some kind of exception because of this storm that is coming.  If your dogs are with you, at least that way you know they would be safe.

I have even thought about just bringing them and then deal with it, what are they going to do beings we are hurricaine evacuies???? Ok so can they sue us??? Kick us out???? we are paying the bill?????? So should I just bring them anyway and just fight the fuss with them??? I mean what can they actually do? My local news says that I "have to take my pets with me"..... so what legal leg does the hotel stand with under those comments? I am sure that the legal system wlll get involved but seem like we would have some kind of legal rights.

So how many of you say I should take them with me even though the hotel says no pets? How much trouble can I get myself in??????? LOL

Maybe you can even leave the dogs in the car with you or your spouse and have on of you check in (while the car is not in view of the front desk) and then just take the dogs into the hotel... NEVER TELLING them you have the dogs with you...

It's not like they can take the dogs away. And once you're there, they'll probably just charge you more for having them. But if you're discreet (stick your head out the door before you take teh dogs for a walk, keep the dog out of the window, keep the do not disturb sign on at all times so that the maid doesn't walk in and find the dogs, etc) you can probably get away with them not even knowing the dogs are there. Now admittedly, it's dishonest, but it's much safer. Just clean up well, bring or buy there a lint roller, bring a dust buster if you have one...

take them with you! I'd be sick with worry over my dogs the entire time, and I know you'd be too. if the worst does happen, then you'd know for sure that they are safe with you.

Four years ago, when we evacuated to a hotel, because of the hurricanes, the hotel allowed animals. Even big dogs, as long as they were on leash. They make special exceptions, during those times. We were there for three days. The fun part, was going up and down the elevator, to take them outside, to potty, while the storm was still hanging around. So take them. It will be ok.

I would take my dogs with me. Too many animals ran into problems with Katrina. I don't think you are foolish for having an evacuation plan I think you are wise. I'd take them with and meanwhile I'd call around and see if you can find a hotel that takes pets. I'd have them crated and maybe even use a crate cover to keep them quiet and hidden during in/out of the hotel times. Good luck. I hope the storm loses intensity and makes a sharp turn back out.

So sorry you guys are having to go through this storm evac but I can see why they are being as cautious as they are! Esp after the Texas fiasco on the interstates, and Katrina...

No WAY leave your pups.....esp since all the neighbors will be gone...who would care for them? Katrina showed what happened to animals left behind...why government rescuers (buses, etc) now will allow pet owners to bring their animals.

I used to show my dogs...we "snuck" them into hotels ALL the time... In THIS situation that would be what I'd do...no ifs, ands, or buts.

Also...most, if not all, Days Inns allow dogs...least they used to.Are there any in that area?

At the very worst, keep them in crates in the car (all windows/ and door open) and sneak them in later....hopefully they are quiet, not barkers???

I would hope that hotels/motels are more lenient regarding their rules at times like this...it is after all, an emergency.

and since they are small dogs that should be easier to negotiate should they say something ("catch you"...ahem!) to you about them.

Please stay safe and good luck!!!!! I hope it moves away from you all!!!!!

Take them with you and worry about what to do once you get to Texas (although I don't understand why going to Texas because it looks like the hurricane could go that direction too??) I have to admit I would probably take the desperate but dishonest approach to not telling the hotel that I have the dogs. Or, I might consider taking my dogs to a friend, relative, or boarding at a kennel somewhere along the way or near where you evacuate too.

This is horrible that people are left to tis anxiety caused by not allowing pets in evacuation sites. Why don't people realize these guys are a part of our families? This urks me that you are even in this delima.

Ok you guys... after a good night sleep I have decided that we will take the ratties with us and just risk getting into trouble!! LOL They are small and are not barkers so they should be pretty easy to hide. I feel better taking them with me biut I am worried about being dishonest.

And just so you all know, I can not get another hotel, they are all booked up within a 6 hour drive from here. We have to book hotel rooms days in advance before we know where the storm will pass after landfall. And by now, you can not find a hotel anywhere. I tried yesterday to get on the east side of us and no luck at all. But that is what we people along the coast do, we make reservations for a week once a storm is named and learn the landfall area and time frame. This ties up hotel rooms across a large area.

But as of this morning, Molly and Busta are coming with us. We have family members that will start arriving today and more that will arrive tomorrow. Then we will all leave Monday morning (early) and get the heck out of dodge!!! LOL

Take your dogs! I snuck my Luna dog into a hotel once - and she was a 50 lb beagle/lab mix - I snuck the cat in too - it was quite an adventure. Take your crates and dogs, and if they give you a hard time, put the dogs in a crate. If they try to kick you out, make such a stink that it would be in their best interest to let you stay (threaten to call the media, etc - AND be sure you have the phone number of a local tv station to really call if they do it) People would be outraged that they would kick you out if you a crate so don't be afraid to fight back.

Godspeed Donna - you are in my thoughts.

I am also on a board called Just Dogs and mentioned your plight to them.. these are some ideas, response I received,.

Morton's Animal Hospital is in Athens TX (very near Tyler) and  I have been told that he not only boards dogs but is also involved with the care and boarding of sanctuary dogs so he might have lots of room.  Number is 903-675-5708 - open till noon today.

Another lady 1 hour from Tyler wants to know how your dogs are with other animals - she might be willing to keep them for you - there are also offers to call around to hotels for you.  If it was me.. I would take my dogs and keep them in their kennels in the hotels at the very least.

I will check this post several times today.   BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!  I hear the evac is starting today and tomorrow.. will you be going earlier?

Glad to read that you are taking the pups with you.  It's easier to seek forgiveness later than to ask permission at the outset.  Just sneak them in, use crates, and have someone with them at all times.  I agree with the idea of being ready to cause a scene by contacing the media if the hotel gives you any trouble.

God be with you and your family and keep each and every one of you safe.
