So my wierd sense of humor gets me in trouble AGAIN.
My commute from the hotel to the office I work at here in Delhi takes 15-30 minutes. It all depends on traffic, and traffic is caused sometimes by the cows, which roam freely and that includes the streets. Cows have the right of way here, and they know it. Doesn't matter how much you honk, they won't move until they are ready.
So a cow gets in front of my car - he's not moving. I lean forward to the driver (who speaks some English - not all do), and I say, "Look. Just run it over. Don't worry... I'll eat it later." He smiles and says, "no sir. I can not."
No one eats beef here, you see. Cows are sacred in the Hindu religion. So I reach into my bag and act like I'm looking for something. "I think I have a knife and fork, here. I'll just eat it raw!" I'm messing with him, of course.
He then takes the car onto the pedestrian path (not a sidewalk because it is not paved), drives around the cow and proceeds to continue to drive around for almost an hour. This is a trip that should take 15 minutes. Now, he is messing with ME. It's not until I start making small talk and ask about his family(4 kids, one works in a BPO) that he finally takes me to the office.

The only thing I'm going to say about the matter is that those people don't know what they're missing!!! God meant for us to eat meat esp cows and they wouldn't be so dang famished if they'd just try it even if they don't believe in God....what has a dang cow done for them?  |

Back in my former life as a computer nerd I had several on my team from India. We had to teach them about American humor, especially sarcasm. As a general rule, they did not understand what we thought of as funny. It was really cool when several of the guys started to "get it" and play along with my very playful team after a few months. So I suspect your taxi driver did not know you were playing, or did not see what was funny about your humor.
It reminds me of one of my hubby's favorite movie lines: "just carve off what you want and ride the rest home" |

Some people just don't appreciate good sarcasm - ha ha ha!!! To each their own, but I'm a huge fan of beef (yummy), though not everyday, but once in a while nothing, but nothing, will do but a nice, juicy, thick, grilled to perfection STEAK.
Now I'm hungry. |

Me too, Tracey! I'm taking a half day today and I'm going over to the Super Center Wal-Mart here in Albany. I haven't been there since they remodeled... and it's supposed to be the biggest Super Center in the WORLD!  Gonna buy me some steaks today!  |

I shudder just to think of the biggest Super Center in the World! Good luck with that  The one at the lake is HUGE. If I forget something and it's on the other side of the store, I'm likely to just say the heck with it, it's tooooo far.
Mmmmmm, steak!!!! Enjoy. Have you ever tried Allegro marinade? Very simple and doesn't disguise the meat. Just soak it in that for awhile, let come to room temperature and slap on the grill to medium rare.
Good grief! I'm gonna be completely distracted now until I can get some steak  |

Apparently this store is on 2 floors, and has an elevator and escalator to move your cart from floor to floor! I'm only going to be in the Market Section.
Is that a maranade I can buy or is it made with pantry items?
Why do you think I took half day from work?  This is a few hours worth of shopping!

Sue: It's in the marinade aisle (see pic below). Truly, it is OUTSTANDING on steak. Don't need to add anything else at all !!! I don't like my steak all covered up with "stuff". A good piece of meat doesn't need much

They do have a 2 story WalMart, about half mile down the road from where I work in Albany! Honest!  I actually hate shopping, but when I buy my groceries there, I save so much more money than when I go to our local market (Price Chopper)... |

Has anyone tried the bison steaks that Walmart is selling? they are supposed to be lower in cholestrol than beef.... |

I'll never forget taking my husband to my favorite Indian restaraunt for the 1st time. He took one look at the menu and said, "Where are the steaks?" and yes, he was serious.
I went on to tell him that cows are sacred in the Hindu religion and he goes, "What the hell kind of religion doesn't let you eat steak!? Thats AWFUL!" |

| I oculd be hindu but I could never be Jewish - no way I am giving up shellfish! Scallops are my absolute favorite food. When I lived in Kodiak scallops and crab were normal faire, nothing special. Has anyone tried the disk Spedino DeMare (spelling) at Carrabbas"? My husband always orders their Sirloin Marsala but I love the ship & scallop Spedino DeMare. And the bread! yummy! |

I LOVE Indian food...
I like red meat too...
But I'm marrying a vegan. Sigh. I was kind of mad at him when I found out he was a vegan, not becuase I hate vegans or something, but because I'm already a picky eater and with his veganess, we are NEVER going to eat the same thing... I know that's an exaggeration, but still. Eatign is important. I come from a very food oriented culture and so, that's why I had a problem with it...
But I've adjusted to the idea, and am okay with it. Plus, I asked him WHY. He doesn't eat meat because he has killed people and he kind of feels that not killing animals helps make up for it. (He's a soldier). As I cannot imagine killing someone, I am sure that anything that helps you deal with having to live with that helps. As for why he doesn't eat milk or eggs, he says that they kills calves to keep more of the mother cow's milk, and that chickens are kept in teeny little boxes to just lay eggs and is cruel. Egg mills, instead of puppy mills. I get that...
My mom says we should get a goat for milk, but I'm fine with him not having milk. I love milk, but he's not trying to convert me to a vegan. And I think soymilk is pretty good, in something (like cereal) though I have trouble drinking it straight. Plus, he's been a vegan for eight or nine years, and lactose is hard for most humans to digest (hence why so many are lactose intolerant) but if you haven't had it in a while, then it's pretty much impossible. It'd make him really sick.
But once I learned about why not the eggs, I was about to say "what about free range chickens?" and before I did he said "I'll eat free range eggs if I can find them". So we're going to have a few chickens! Because I'm fine with him eating no meat (had a vegetarian roommate once, no big deal). And I'm okay with milk substitutes (not so sure about cheese...). But EGG substitute? The idea kind of grosses me out. So we'll get raise our own! 
It'll be difficult though, because so much pasta and some bread have egg/dairy/whatnot. You know, staple foods. So I'm going to have to get a bread maker and a pasta maker!
Hehe.. I got on such a tangent I forgot what the post was about! I have a few Hindu friends from college, and since all they can't eat is beef (milk is fine) they did okay. Some Hindus don't eat meat at all... but they are generally Brahmin priests or the upper castes. Most Hindus who come to America to be educated are from the merchant caste (which is the middle one, but not necessarily middle class in American terms, no such thing exists over there). My friends are from Nepal though, not India... but I've also taken a very, very extensive class on Hinduism... (I was a religion minor) |

Geeze, Mitch. I enjoy your sense of humor and we all should have one -- but you are messing with something that is sacred to that religion. I sort of think it's funny the guy got back at you! (Yikes, I sound like a bleeding heart liberal when I am actually a very, very conservative type and proud of it, but you don't mess with people's religion.)
BTW, Hindu's believe in one God, they call him Brahma. Now, they don't believe that Jesus was God incarnate. They actually believe that Brahma is everywhere, thus we are all have some divinity in us. So, they are not Christian, but they do believe in God. They do however acknowledge that Jesus lived and see him as a great teacher and philosopher, just not the Messiah. I know they believe cows sacred, but I'm not sure where that comes from. Remember, there are many Catholics who don't believe in eating meat on Friday or during Lent. Many Episcopalians refrain from eating meat on Friday during Lent. Jewish religion does not believe in eating pork because it's in the Torah not to. It's something about haven cloven hoofs, a symbol of Kosher, but not chewing cud, which is not a symbol of Kosher. So, the pig is a symbol of hypocrisy - unclean inside (from not chewing cud) but outwardly cloven which is symbolic of Kosher.
Oops, sorry - I think I got carried away. Oh, and just so eveyone understands -- I'm a Christian - so this comes from reading I've done and people I've known (and not eating pig is discussed in the Old Testament), not personal experience!
