So, my husband - the trusting, southern gentleman, whose word is gold and thinks everyone out there is as honest as he is.  . .  he's not exactly computer/internet savy. . . .  the rest of the story. . . .

He has an hotmail account for ordering, etc so he doesn't get a lot of junk in his regular account.  He gets an email from "them" stating they are going to cancel his account for inactivity (he rarely uses it) unless he emails them back and verifies his email address and (are you ready?) his password.    He falls for it and does so.  Oh my gosh!   So, yesterday we get a call from a friend who has gotten an email from "my husband" stating he is in Indonesia where he has been working with AIDS children and he has been arrested and needs $5,000 to get out of jail and get home, blah, blah, blah.  Yep, they hi-jacked his account and his contact list (yeah - cause they had is password) and sent this to everyone in his contacts.  They also changed his password, so he can't get back to the acccount.  Well, fortunately, everyone knows he is not in Indonesia and this was a scam - he got lots of calls yesterday.  I about died when he told me this.  What --- NEVER give out a password.   What was he thinking!  Well, I guess he knows now.

So, if you have hotmail and get an email asking you to verify your information -- NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD.

there are so many scams out there...rule of thumb: ligitimate sites NEVER ask you to email your info (especially your password) back to them - they have all that info.

Make sure he changes all the info on any sites he was ordering from ASAP...before they can access those accounts too.

Is there anyway for the authorities to find out who it is based on anyone who responds?

Now Jan, you know that I love you and Randy, but if he's done gone off to Indonesia and got hisself locked up and is waiting for ME to send him $5000 to get out of jail....he's gonna be sittin' there for awhile.

1. I don't think there is - they reported it to hotmail (msn)

2. Hee hee, I called Randy at work today and got his voice mail. Left him a message that I was checking on how things were in Indonesia and if he could get to a phone to call me. Guess what - I'm not sending him $5,000 either!

Well, I feel for your husband.....you know, crooks are out there everywhere today and unless you have the mind of a crook, you just cannot possibly come up with all the scenarios they will use to steal your identity. Obviously, giving your password out is rule #1 thing not to do....but you know what, in this day and age if they want your info they can get it..... Case in point....

A year or so ago, I came home and opened an envelope addressed to me from "western union".....now I have never sent or received money in my life from western union..... I open the envelope and it says that $500 has been wired from our checking account to Malaysia. I show the letter to my husband and he says I bet someone got into our account at the bank. Sure enough, over $2000 had been taken from our account. We immediately called the bank and they got right on it, and we did get all of our money back.....but IT CAN HAPPEN....even if you are being super careful.

Lesson learned for your husband.....I'm sure he won't do that one again! :-)

Lynn

yes, if they want it bad enough I guess they can get it. You know, in a way it's sort of sweet that my husband is so trusting.

The sad thing about these scammers is, its hard to catch them. And they end up stealing money from trusting people like your husband. My Dad had someone try to scam him about a year ago. He wanted to sell a few items. So I put them on craigslist for him. And the guy who wanted to buy the stuff sent 3 money orders from 3 different places. I thought something was funny about that. So I said to my Dad,'we need to check this out before cashing these money orders and sending this guy the items that  Dad was selling. So I had my bank check these money orders out.. And it  turns out they were stolen!!!!Thank God I did that.    If my Dad had cashed these money orders, he would have been out $5,000.00 dollars. Because once the bank found out they were stolen, the money would have came out of his bank acct.

And always remember this.........

NEVER  GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD

I tried posting before, but got timed out.

When my dad died in the hospital, he had a credit card in his wallet. They did not steal the credit card, instead some orderly was paid by crooks to just copy the number and forward it to them. Two months after we buried my dad, my mom gets a call that somebody with a Spanish surname and my dad's names as middle and last name was trying to get cash with a suspicious looking credit card that had my father's correct card number on it.

Clearly they had waited two months after the Pile of Wasted Protoplasm masquerading as a hospital worker had sent them the number so that it would be hard to trace. Just goes to show you, take NOTHING to the hospital except your insurance card.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Hmmm, maybe my "skeptical" personality has kept me out of Indonesia.  I dont trust anyone or anything that comes over the internet----well, 99% of it, anyway.

My boss got the same kind of email from somebody posing as an Ebay employee. Luckily she didn't send them her password.

I just thought of something! In my e-mail account I sometimes save e-mails that contain user name and password of other accounts I have. For example, when you get that "confirming" e-mail you've sign up, I save that. Do you know what your hubby might have saved in his hotmail account?
