Today Aka and Taffy had vet checkups and both got their 3 year rabies vacs. Also Aka got his last series of his other vacs that I am too tired to remember right now. Since he had a reaction the last round, Dr. Gensil gave him a preshot to counter act any problems. So he is a bit groggy and ready for a long nap.
They both did very well at the vet's office. We got there early since I was confused about our appt. time AND the office had gotten an emergency case right before we got there. A dog hit by a car. The dog is alive but they are worried about some neurological problems. ANyway, the three of us has an extra long wait. Both Aka and Taffy were very calm and patient and while Aka sat in my lap, Taffy took the chair beside me like a little lady.
A few folks and their pets came in and both my dogs were very good about not barking or whining or anything. A lady and her daughter brought in a beautiful Black Lab puppy. Puppy breath, puppy belly and the little girl explained that the puppy's name was Jada and she was just a baby but she would grow to be very big! Then she asked me about my dogs. We had a nice little chat and she was very good about not reaching out for the dogs and standing still while she talked with me.
Jada the black lab puppy was busy grunting away, and sticking her tongue out and in general wanting to get down on the floor and play!!
Taffy's was weighed and she is 11 and one half pounds!!! Aka weighs 11 pounds!! I can't believe that are that heavy. Dr. Gensil seems to think they are a bit over weight and should be around 9 pounds, even he couldn't pince up much fat tissue. Taffy is solid as a little rock so who knows? However, I will watch the treat intake and make sure we are not overdoing that. Both pups can get to GrandMargie in a big way and she slips them treats both from the table and their treat jar.
Both dogs had a fecal done to check for internal parasites and heartworms and thankfully both are negative for either. Aka HATES having anything stuck up his rear so after having both temp and a fecal done, he promptly hunched up on the floor and gave them a lesson on the fact that his pooper is an outie by have a nice big poop just for them. The vet techs laughed and said that happens a lot. Cleaned it up and told Aka thanks but they got enough without his contributing more!!
Taffy had a hard time with her vein stick. She didn't like it and the tech couldn't get a good blood flow. It was sort of coming out in spurts rather than just flowing into the vac tube. So the tech tried the other leg and finally got enough blood. They had to but a bandage on both legs as neighter would stop bleeding after the needle was removed.
Taffy was so cute in her blue wrap bandages. When placed on the floor, she acted as though she didn't have front legs! Finally when she did walk it was with very exaggerated stiff front leg steps!! Too funny. The tech took the bandages off about 30 mins later and the stick sites were fine. Taffy spent the entire ride home and some time at home, cleaning up her legs where the blood has stained.
I told mom that I wished I had had the camera to get a pic of her in her blue bandages. The stiff leg walk was funny but the blue bandages looked like those wrist sweat bands that folks wear when exercising. All Taffy needed was a leotard and a headband and she would have been an 80's gal in her workout suit!
Dr. Gensil was very pleased with Aka's teeth, he said he had never seen finer. I explained that Aka chews daily on a bully stick and that was why. Dr. Gensil told Aka he was a good dog for chewing so well. Taffy has a bit of tartar buildup but I have dental wipes that I am using. Dr. Gensil also gave us a fingertip brush to use on her as well.
Taffy gladly gave everyone BUT Dr. Gensil kisses and tail wags. She is still very leery of men. Dr. Gensil told her she was breaking his heart. LOL Aka was much more mellow this go around. He did get muzzled during his shots but he held very still. he even let the tech pick him back up off the floor and accepted her pets and luving. All the techs are great there! Very caring and attentive and good to the animals.
We were in the back since the front examine room was occupied. There was a big gorgeous cat in the recovery area named Mr. Hairy L Jones. Dr. Gensil said he had been with them a month and basically had decided that he ran the clinic!! Hairy kept giving Aka and Taffy the evil green eye but they pretty much ignored him. He had a huge bandage around his middle so he must of had surgery. But to be in a vet hospital for a month! wow.
After the shots, heartworm and flea and tick med purchases, we left the office a lot poorer but very happy that both dogs are so healthy! They wanted to know if the dogs had had a bath recently since their coats were so soft and shiny. I told Dr. Gensil it wasn't a bath, it was regular brushing and GOOD food NOT the Science junk.
He looked at me funny but then laughed since he and I have had several discussions on food. He knows I have done lots of reading on it and I have even given him copies. He too said that Science was pushed and that vets don't get much nutrition training. At least he is open to hearing about what I have found and researched.
He said that next time he wanted to visit with me about the frequency of vacs for my two. He said that he tends to do annual but that he would abide by what I wanted. I love this guy and his wife and daughter. They are a great family. His daughter 9 runs a cat rescue at the office and cares for the cats she is trying to place in either foster homes or forever homes. She is cute as a button!
So we had a good if not tiring visit to the vet's office. Aka and Taffy now have new deep pink/red heart shaped three year rabies tags which will go on their collars a bit later this afternoon, once they wake up.
Yea for happy healthy dogs and an excellent relationship with a vet we trust and can talk to. |
