I don't know about all of you, but I am so happy that I can now get everything I need for my pets without giving my money to PetsMart or SuperPet Market. (those are the 2 retail pet stores we have in Savannah). This is just my way of saying that I don't approve of stores that sell live animals.
My food for the dogs, guinea pigs, parakeets, and chinchilla all comes from a local feed store. Also the shavings I use in the cages. Anything else I want that the feed store doesn't have or can't get, I get from Jeffer's or Drs. Foster and Smith.

Both of my dogs are rescues. 7 out of 10 guineas are rescue as well. My parakeets came from a local lady and not the pet store. My chin is a pet store purchase before I knew the things I know now.

When I went on a search for good dog food, I found that each website listed where in your area you can buy from. This is how I found that my feedstore has everything I need. I encourage all of you to buy as little as possible from pet stores that sell live animals.

Excuse me, but, the PetSmart here only 'sell' dogs and cat from rescue groups. They have adoptions from various groups in the stores. They also often have Greyhound rescue groups there to bring aweness to people. They do not sell puppies and kittens from breeders or mills. I support this. It allows people to see that there are many animals in need in our community.

Your petSmart doesn't sell guinea pigs, hamsters etc? Also PetsMart makes a great profit on the rescue days as most people who get a dog from a local rescue that is set up in PetsMart buy their equipment there as well.

Well, that's great if one can do it.  My local feed stores don't carry the items I need.  And, I'm gonna really shock you and tell you that I got Katie from a pet store!  Yep, first dog I ever bought from a pet store.  But there she was and I fell in love.  I didn't care where she was -- I knew she was meant to be my dog (and she was - because it is a true miracle that my husband agreed for me to buy her).  Now, I bought her from a local pet store that has a very good reputation and treats their puppies very well.  I don't feel the least bit guilty.  But, what if she'd been at PetSmart?  I'd have still bought her.  I saw her, I had to have her.  And, I figure in a way I "rescued" her from a glass cage.
I understand completely the point you are making.  But, first and foremost, I'm going to take care of my animals the very best way I can.  If I can't get quality food anywhere but PetSmart, that is where I'll go.  Fortunatley, I now buy my food from Incredipet (this is a different store from where I got Katie).  It is a Kentucky pet store and they support adoption and work with the Humane Society.  I am happy I can support them.

Our PetSmart is the same...no puppies, kittens, or other live animals.  Only older cats up for adoption.  Plus they have local rescue groups with animals for adoption at their store every weekend.  And when you check out, there is an option to donate $1 to the rescue fund.

Ours too. Also a girl I work with owns a pet store that sells pets. She couldn't care for these animals better and gets them from reputable breeders. So, not all pet stores are bad just because they sell animals. " Rescuing" an animal is wonderful, but just isn't for some people.

Well, what's wrong with making a profit by selling equipment.  This is America you know.  We are a capitalist society here.

On their wall of glass cages, I've only seen adult cats. If they make a profit from the adoption days, maybe that will make them want to keep hosting them. If they weren't making a profit, you can bet they wouldn't go to the time and trouble to host them.

I wasn't trying to stir up a hornets nest or cause offense. I am just happy that I can support a local store owner who doesn't sell animals and not a huge corporation who buys and sells milled animals. This didn't happen over night, it has taken me a long time to get to where I can do this.

If a dog or cat is rescued, I don't care that Petsmart makes a few dollars when people buy what they need to take care of their new pet. In my opinion, they are still providing an outlet for these pets to be adopted. And no, they don't sell the other critters. Neither does the Petsupermarket. They do sell fish tho.
I am not tryong to start an argument here. Just wanted things to be clear. I used to buy from a feed store here too. It was close to where I worked and was easier to get to. They sell chicks, bunnies and ducklings. They do a booming business around Easter time. Many of these poor creatures end up in shelters too because they grow-up and are no longer 'cute'. Does your feed store sell these animals? And do they make sure thay are going to 'good' homes, farms etc??

Thank you Judy. I am on the same page as you. I also ONLY use online pet supply stores and my local pet supply store that sell NO live animals. Unfortunately, not everyone sees things the way we do and some will continue to support "animal brokers" because of convenience. I was basically attacked on an earlier post here, when I merely made the statement that "Petland is a known puppy mill broker".

Again, I think it's wonderful that you can do this. I guess I just get tired of being made to feel guilty about everything. I shouldn't drive this car, or use this product or buy from this distributor, etc, etc, etc. Guilt, guilt, guilt. We give to lots of charities, we support the Humane Society, I have pledged and given money for dogs in kill shelters to get them into rescue, etc, etc. I just don't want to feel guilty that I bought my dog or that I may buy her pet food from a big pet store.   But, again, I commend you for your actions.

It would be nice to be able only shop at feed stores. I do buy Lucy's food from the feed store here in Ellensburg, but that is mainly because it is the only place in this town that sells nutro. If I run out and I'm in the Seattle area I will buy from petsmart. Like others Woodinville's has shelters and rescue groups come in every weekend to raise awareness and to find loving homes for their animals. Actually the section in the store that adopts adult cats, comes from the purrfect pals cat adoption group where I adopted my Tubby from. Like Katie, Lucy was purchased at a local petstore who hand selects the breeders from which their puppies come from. Also, like Jan I was not in there looking for a dog, yet Lucy found me. It was meant to be. She is a very healthy dog, and the owners of the petstore check in to make sure that she is to see if they are to keep using the breeders. They are interested in the animals wellbeing. I do understand that you may feel against petstores that sell animals, but that is you definately your choice. I don't know where the chinchillas, hamsters, and rats come from that are sold in the petstores, but I do know where the dogs and cats at petmart come from. Petsmart is an outing I make with Lucy, we go play, shop, and then usually go next door and eat lunch or have coffee on the patio if the weather permits it.

Sorry, I see where you said your feed store doesn't sell any live animals. Unfortunately, the ones here do. By the way, I live in the city! What the heck is a feed store doing selling chicks? They aren't allowed in the City limits!

"Well, what's wrong with making a profit by selling equipment"

There is nothing wrong with making a profit. the lady at the store I shop in makes a profit, but her profit doesn't go to buying more milled animals to sell. Many cities also have pet stores that sell equipment only. I hope that more and more start doing this. A store/company that truly cares about homeless animals would stop adding to the problem.

I didn't post this for an arguement. I am just happy to support small local business owners and not corporate retail. I will ask Lance to remove this thread since it is causing trouble.

Good point, Deb.  And of course, feed stores sell to farmers that sell cattle for slaughter.  Hmmmmm.

We must remember here that we all love our animals just as much as the next person. We all care for them in the best way possible. Some of us feed different foods, some even make our own for them. Some of us have gone through extensive training with our pups, some have trained at home. Some of us choose to shop at stores like feed store and some at large stores. None of this makes any one of us better than the other. It is just the way we do things. All of our animals are cared for and many of us help out others that are still in shelters or rescue homes. We each have our own way and this may have to do with where we are located. When I'm in Seattle is is rare to find a feed store or any petstore that does not sell pets. I commend you on being able to shop at live animal free stores. Try not to feel attacked, others are just expressing their thoughts as feelings as you did when starting this post. Every person on this site is incredibly in love and involved in their animals. We treat and care for them in an individualized way. It is what makes each one of us different and helps bring a wide variety of information to this site.
