but how do you make him drink?? Fred has been vomiting and I want to make sure he is hydrated. The vet said to make sure he is drinking water so he doesn't dehydrate. Ummmm how??
I did run him up to the vet on my lunch hour and how nice is this, the vet just came out in the waiting room, looked at his gums, pinched the skin on his back and said he was a little dehydrated but nothing to worry about and to make sure he drinks liquids and the best part is when I went to pay her she said no charge. I really like my vet.  |

what a nice vet. Some would charge you 50$ just to show their face and probably even more for fluids and test. I bet if you just keep offering fresh cool water he will drink when he needs to. Ya could offer chicken broth but make sure it is not full of salt that could make it worse. Water is better but is you start to worry try it. Sometimes just a little flavor will go along way they think it is a treat just dilute chicken broth with more water

Max is not a drinker.. We do mix chicken broth - no salt/low salt kind with water. |

| Sometimes you can rub some water on the gums and lips a few times and that will get them interested. When the Nut was very sick when he first got here I used a little liquids syringe and gave him small amounts of water that way (forced) but I wouldnt' do that to Fred at this point. Just try rubbing cool water on his lips and teeth and tongue and when he laps it off do a little more to see if you can interest him. |

| Ok you won't believe this but it is true and I did do it. When Cameo was dehydrated and wouldn't drink I actually got a cup of water and took a swallow and Cameo was more than willing to drink it from me as I spit a little into her mouth. A dropper or syringe, without the needle of course,would work for this but I didn't have one so I faked it. Hope he feels better soon. Please let us know. |

maybe see if he likes ice?...I've given my dogs chicken broth (low sodium kind) that I froze in ice cube trays on very hot days. it was a big hit with them.  remember that sometimes too much water, when they are already throwing up can make them throw up more...so make sure that when he finally does decide to drink, he doesn't get too much. |

janie, it's all good LOL. At work it's hard to respond to all the threads but I always make sure I read what's up with the PalmBay pack. Hope Rattagan is feeling better too, his poor toofers. and that Cammie got so big and loves to cuddle huh??!! |

| with just getting BB he is not drinking when we are home but i already found a way around it just plain ice cubes he loves them (i think cause he can hide and eat them) Sorry i don't have better advice i am still new to rat terrier's and their ways lol |

| I have found over the years popsicles are a great way to keep dogs hydrated. They taste good and if bitten off and given to them in smalll chunks, they usually eagerly gobble them up. I haave sugar-free pops, but make sure if you use sugar free, they do not have Xylitol in them. Very toxic. The ones I have have maltodextrin as the sweetener. |

We have the Queen of dehydration here. Usually end up at the vets for ivs. But she will eat crushed ice out of my hand. Maybe that will work. |

if it were mine....they would TOTALLY want to drink out of MY glass...so along the lines of what Janie siad....maybe getting water for "yourself" and taking it somewhere to sit....then offering fred some....mine always want whatever I HAVE! heheeh

| my moms dog was sick one time and she used a syringe and put it in the side of his mouth very calmly and talked to him while she was doing that!!!!! |

| With Hendryx, the ice cube trick usually works. I pop a couple of cubes in his water and he starts to chase them with his tongue. Then he laps up the cold water. I hope Fred is doing better soon. |

so I learned if you put a dog outside in 90 degree heat he will drink LOL. I did rub water on his gums and then he did get interested. He started perking up at night, their buddy Clyde came over to play and Fred played for a little would stop then play some more- by the end of the night he was pretty much his ol self. From them playing so much he was drinking water just fine. I guess a good friend helps you feel better!!
