 Rattitude Problem

Wednesday evening when I was at work, Bob got into the kitchen trash and spread some stuff all over the living room. Hubby was on the ham radio and not paying attention to him. He was very mad about having to clean up the mess.
When I got home, hubby and Bob were on opposite sofas in the living room and glaring at each other. Hubby wasn't too happy with my response when he told on Bob. I merely asked how Bob had opened the cabinet door and gotten the trash can out.
I really think most of the problems we have with our ratties are because WE have neglected to do something, like put the trash can where they can't get to it. What do y'all think? |

lol I promise you are right Pam. Most of the training issues we have with new dogs come when I am not home and hubby is on duty. He gets so absorbed in what he is doing he doesn't pay attention. See, even if you left the trash out, you would have heard something or NOT heard something that would set your senses off to check. Bob was too absorbed. There is a reason this happens more often to men than women, btw (that focus). At the risk of boring you, it has to do with hemispheric brain dominance and the corpus collosum. In women there is more communication between the hemispheres all the time. In men when they are in one side (left brain) analyzing their other senses that are right brain controlled are turned down - they have less inter hemisphere chatter. This is both good an bad. It means they can hyper focus better but miss more of the world around. (short and trite version) |

Sounds like Hubby's fault to me. I agree, I think most "dog problems" are actually their humans' problems. Either they've been allowed to get away with something, or not trained to do or not do something....or IF they are trained or generally well behaved, they are, after all, a dog and will occasionally forget their manners or instinct takes over...only so much you can expect. |

This is so true. Alice got out the day Guy was home because he was so into the yardwork he forget he left the side of the garage open. They don't like hearing it's their fault for the dog's actions but it is!! LOL....
Bob acting like a dog?? What's that all about!!

Bethany: LOL, thanks for the scientific explanation I read one time that there was a real, justified and logical explanation for why most men literally do not see things that are right in front of them. Don't remember what the explanation was, just that it made the point that this is a real condition that affects men I just remember thinking so THAT IS WHY he (hubby) opens the closet door and doesn't see his shirt, or looks in the refrigerator and doesn't see the mustard - LOL. |

| This is funny- I just posted on another thread (about potty training) that training generally fails because we humans aren't doing our job right- it's not the dogs fault. Can't tell you how many "oops!" issues we've had at our place because my 16 year old son has been in charge (I'm not home). That's when 99% of the potty accidents, and got ahold of a pencil or other unacceptables (as I like to call them) happen when I'm not there and he's in charge. So, sorry, but have to agree here with the rest- it was hubby's fault, not Bob's. Bob's just being a dog- that's his job!! |

I have to keep my garbage in one of those small Wal-Mart type bags in my kitchen SINK (I got one of those 2 sided jobbies) cuz if not, the babies would have a field day.... tried the covered garbage can, and when they couldn't get into it, they'd pee on it.......LOL.... dang dogs anyway!! (But I love 'em!!)

| Our trash can is usually kept in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. There is still a child proof latch on it. But sometimes, someone will take it out of the cabinet while cooking or cleaning up and then neglect to put it back in. |

| I agree. Jack and Jeter are food hounds and my mother always makes comments about it... BUT they also have 4 kids in the house who are easy targets and no matter what I have done the kids always undo it, just by being kids. So again.....as a result of humans, the dogs act the way they do. Glad Bob is okay! |

Yup. For all the shoes Murphy has chewed up... trash he has gotten into... toys/DVDs/electronics he ruined... it was never his fault. We left it where he could get to it, and left him unsupervised for sometimes only a minute, but that's all it takes. Keeping him on a lead is a hassle, but it's the only way *I* can keep him out of trouble. Maybe others have more time to dedicate to it or maybe just more attentive. If Murphy is out of sight... it's never a good thing.
And yea... I've been in that headspace Bob was in before. It sucks to pick up trash the dog drug out, and it's easy to get ticked off about it, but the dog won't understand unless you catch him at it, so just better for your blood pressure to just clean it up and move on.

Hmm. That's interesting. My beau is transgendered, so he shouldn't have a scientific excuse; yet he still can't see his hand in front of his face sometimes, for thinking about other things. He also can't see dirty dishes in the sink or dirty laundry in the basket. Mysterious ... very mysterious ...

I've been trying to train hubby for almost 25 years, with a little bit of success. I doubt he'll ever be fully trained. He says the same thing about me.

That's what I would say too. I mean the study shows it is a pattern not an absolute how much traffic flows between the hemispheres so there is even variance in the the levels in each gender. It is and average and averages are often generalizations so your sweetie is just exceptional (grin).

To me, realizing that Moose's bad behavior was almost always my fault for leaving something or not paying close enough attention, was much like when I went off to college and realized that my parents were right all of those years. For all of you Mom's out there, I made sure to tell my mother that when I came to face that scary fact |
