I was at my local Lowes yesterday and Lance spotted some bright red blooming trees in the garden shop so I just had to go see! They had the very-hard-to-find-around-here RED crepe myrtles!!!!!!. I mean, PURE DARK RED (no shade of pink in it at all!). Lance and I are NOT fond of pink in any of its various shades on crepe myrtles. I like the lavender, purple and RED ones!!!!!!! My camera doesn't do the red justice, but here's a pic for ya. I've been wanting some of these for years but just haven't been able to find them in Texas or Louisiana! Bought two for my front courtyard wall. Lance promises to dig the holes for me tomorrow. I'm so excited to have them out front as they look gorgeous next to my limestone courtyard wall.

I think they're fairly rare, Mikki. New Orleans used to be covered with thousands of beautiful crepe myrtles in the most unusual colors I'avve ever seen, but even there, I almost never saw the true red ones.
Actually, I used to live by a lady in Galveston that had one much darker red, nearly a maroon/cranberry color that was even prettier! But I've not seen that color before or since. She said she bought it in South Carolina. It was absolutely the most gorgeous crepe myrtle I'ave EVER seen and hope to find one myself one day.

| Peggy I love crepe myrtle trees! You do realize that you can "transplant" the off shoots from the roots and get more plants, right? I have 3 in my yard that I transplanted from my Granny's house. They are bad about sending off shoots from the roots and if you don't keep them trimmed up they turn into bushes. So just remember that if you want more, you can grow your own. If you still know the neighbor with the dark red one, you can get one from her too. |

I love crepe myrtles... my big one is in full bloom right now and looks to be the color of the one in your picture! Would love to see a picture of your garden, Peggy! Especially since I have NO green thumb at all -- I always admire those who do! |

| Actually, I'm not much of a flower person, Nora. Hate to weed and most of 'em die on me. I have pretty good look with flowering trees and shrubs, however. The heat and drought in Texas has been so bad the last few years, flowers, plants and grass are just burning up and dying, even with heavy watering. I had a humongous water bill last month after watering every couple days and the lawn is STILL burning up & dying! And the workmen doing my new patio cover have pretty mush Killed off the brand new grass we just set out this past spring around the patio. Wish I had thought to wait until AFTER the construction was complete to plant the new sod! Why is hindsight always 20-20? |

I have killed Bamboo which I understand is very hard to do, took me 4 days tops. I have no green on my thumb. We have candles wherever a plant should be
They are very pretty these myrtels though, did you get them planted?? |

OMG, I didn't know such an animal existed! Those are GORGEOUS! Our neighbors have the hot pink variety, but they're so blah compared to THOSE! I like the purple ones, too. Good luck with them! |

I think you may havae topped even my record, Valerie. No, we've been just too busy with remodeling to get around to planting them in the ground yet. Soon, I hope.
