I was just wondering how many, if any, people here are into that sort of thing.  I was just thinking about our min pin who used to stand, growl ferociously, and bark at absolutely nothing.  His hackle used to stand up and he would posture like he was ready to kill whatever it was that was freaking him out.

It used to scare the bejeezus out of me because I've heard all my life that some animals have a 6th sense about things like that.  For the 1st time since she joined the family, Pixie did this very thing last night.  She stood and growled at a blank wall for several minutes.   I very nearly soiled my armor...

Opinions??

Animals know! I used to work on a horse farm when I was a teenager. My favorite horse (the one who would later become my beloved first horse, Stuff) was terrified of this pine grove across the pond. Most kids at the stable liked to ride around the pond and past the grove, because it was a beautiful ride that ended in a perfect meadow for cantering. But Stuff was having none of it. He would get halfway around the pond and then stop, stamping and snorting, rolling his eyes wildly.

We always had the radio on in that barn. Yukon, the big part-wolf (who never barked -- only howled) and Chelsae, the small Sheltie mix, were lazing about the barn as I cleaned stalls and the horses munched their hay one afternoon. Suddenly, the radio fuzzed out and went silent. At the same moment, Yukon and Chelsay leapt from the aisle and ran out to the edge of the pond, barking wildly at the trees -- even Yukon, whose bark I'd never heard in the three years I knew him! The horses dropped their hay and stood rock-still with their ears pricked, eyes wide, trembling.

This went on for 45 minutes. Then, abruptly, the radio fuzzed back to life. The dogs stopped barking and wandered off to drink some water, and the hroses went back to their hay. I went out to the pond with the dogs, but I couldn't see anything out of the ordinary -- certainly nothing interesting enough to keep Stuff and his stablemates from their hay! What on earth had they seen out in that pine grove?

It wasn't till several months later that I learned there were people buried in that grove -- unnamed victims of silicosis, the disease that claimed the lives of many who built Hawk's Nest Tunnel back in the thirties. Although wet drilling techniques and face masks would have saved many of the workers, these precautions were not employed in the building of the tunnel. Workers died by the dozens and were either sent home or buried, often in unmarked graves. Some of them, I came to learn, were buried in the pine grove.

I was SO CREEPED OUT that day!!

i never thought about until now, but i always comment on how moose refuses to bark at normal stuff, but instead opts to bark at the wall, or at absolutly nothing. he can be in mid tug-of-war, stop, run into the other room, stare off at something and bark like the dickens. he doesn't even bark when we play. he also wakes up at least twice a night to bark, he never leaves the bed, but he shakes a little. i just grab him and hold him, and he falls back asleep...i wonder...

I totally think they sense stuff, too. I have one story about something that happened to Kozmo that I don't think anyone would believe (so I never tell it), but I saw it happen and I know its true. I still get scared when I think about it to this day; it was what made a skeptic into a believer.

The man who built that house also died in it, but knowing some about the history of that land, it very well could have been someone before him who was tied to it. Lots of indians used to be in that area. I was always terrified in that house, even before anything "off" happened. When it burned, I was almost relieved that I never had to step foot in it again. My sister was terrified of that house as well, and my husband, who wasn't even a paranormal skeptic - he outright denounced it and told me I was an idiot for even wondering - was a believer by the time it burned. I think he'd deny it to anyone else, but after watching "The Exorcism Of Emily Rose" a few years ago, he told me that he had no doubt that the house was haunted.

Nothing much happens at this house (and its really old, so that sort of surprises me), but since my Dad died last year, our black lab has done some odd stuff, and like I said, Pixie just had a staring/barking contest with a wall...and I've not seen her do anything like that until now. These two dogs are usually so predictable, so when they start acting weird, MY ears perk up. If nothing else, its an interesting theory, I suppose.

Sary!! Hawk's Nest Tunnel?? My family is from Huntington, and I will actually be up there for a family reunion at the beginning of August. Pixie is staying at home with Daddy, though.

The last time I was up there, my great grandmother was talking about Hawk's Nest!! She had a picture of her and my great grandfather up there in the early 1940's!

Yes, animals as well as children can see and hear these things more aptly than adults. Yes I believe in everything paranormal and spiritual........

Wow!  I went to Marshall, so I was in Huntington for five years!  The farm I mentioned was in Summersville, though, which is where I grew up.  Neat!

My grandfather went to Marshall Most of the family did...or does. My aunt even works in the Christian bookstore. I can't remember if it's Aunt Diane or Aunt Lolita. Pretty sure its Lolita, though.
My Dad was a big Marshall fan, and we went to Stationers to find something "Marshall" to put in the casket with him when he died last September (found a mini version of one of his favorite baseball hates and had them put it in his hands). He's buried at Woodmere with a lot of the other family. He was born and he also died at St. Mary's Hospital.
So how did you manage 5 years in that craphole?! I do good to last 2 weeks.
I can't, however, wait to make my self sick on Stewart's Hot Dogs and Cam's Ham! And some Gino's Steak Subs!
