The community in which we have our lake house was having a pre-4th picinic tonight. My son decides to come up from our regular house, but doesn't show up unitl 6 because of a late start and traffic. So much for the picnic, but we did discover a good Japanese restaurant in the area.

We would have just gone to the picnic and let our son come whenever he did, but we didn't get a chance to warn him about Hendryx's propensity to dash out the door from here. Figured better a lost picnic than a lost Hendryx.

So, we get back from the restaurant, and i decide to take Hendryx for a walk. I call him, he comes over - tail wagging away - and put on the leash. We're no more than 20 feet out the door when some kid about a block away lights off an ashcan. Hendryx's ears go flat, his tail goes down, his back arches up, and he does an about face going back to the house. I tug on the leash, assure him that it's far away, and we continue the walk. We're 50 feet away from the house when some other kid about a block in the other direction lights of a string of firecrackers. Ears flat, tail down, back up, about face, backward march! I pick him up - he's shaking like a leaf - soothe him and try to get him to at least pee before we go back. That's when a kid a half block away lights off an M80. Ears, tail, back, whimper, shake, back to the house and don't give me any of your human crap - I'm hiding under the BED!!! And there he lies shaking even now.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Sorry....I'm so glad I live out in the country!! We can still see the fireworks, but they aren't so loud that they send Max scurrying under the bed!! A couple of years ago, when we lived in town, they had fireworks after a festival and Max clawed his way over my shoulder, up the steps, in the door, and behind my chair.....we decided to move shortly thereafter!! LOL!!

Poor guy... but he's smart.  Stuff is blowing up around him... and by kids (who are hopefully supervised) no less!  Taking cover is not a completely unexpected reaction.

This holiday will be over soon.

Hendryx is a mixed bag of bravery to the point of stupidity (he chased a fox out of our yard once) to cowardice beyond belief. He's not only afraid of thunder, he's afraid of heavy downpours. He's gotten better about car rides. I think we'll keep him.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

Bless his heart! I don't blame him for being scared. He's probably heard about all those fireworks accidents where people blow off their fingers and stuff.
