..........every couple weeks or so we will find one of our three dogs (two sweet ratties and one evil chihuahua) with a piece of bread. Now if we ATE bread I might not be surprized but they are getting it someone other than from us. I always panic and if they won't drop it have to pulla nd pry it from their mouths. I don't know where they are getting this but I do not want them to eat anything that I don't approve of first (well, witht he exception of a lizard or two). This is unnerving to me. My mind is racing with images of poison bread. Out back fence backs up to a street and not to another house albeit a dead end street. My husband thinks maybe a rodent is stashing it and the ratties are finding it. Either way I am unhappy.

Could someone be giving them the bread through the fence? If so, I'd be mad....

It's the not knowing the source of the bread that's scary, I hear you.  And I think you are rightly concerned.

If you think they are finding it in the back yard, maybe a little patrol of the border might be in order before the pups go out, just to see what's out there?

Can you pin point when and where they are when they find it? Is the bread dirty like it was buried? Does it have an order like mold or something else? Knowing the when and where might help you answer the how and why........

I've inspected the bread and it doesn't have any strange odor, isn't moldy, but is a little hard- not crouton hard but left out overnight stiff. My fence paremeter is a jungle of vines and plantings in the back (purposely so to allow privacy swimming) so if someone "threw" something over the fence it would likely land in foliage and have to work its way down. They could, however, put something through nearer the bottom of the fence betweenthe slats that could easily fall to the ground. I really don't know why anyone would want to harm my babies but then again cats have disappeared in my neighborhood....

Is it small enough that someone might be feeding it to birds? We have neighbors on 2 sides with major bird feeders. Every now and then I find a piece of suet on my patio and i know it's because the birds are carrying it between the yards.

It's whole slices and normally they are shrunk or curled up on the edges to indicate to me that they have absorbed some outdoor humidity possibly. I wish there was a pattern to when and where they get it but all I can say is that they usually try to bring it inside to chow down because it is a whole slice of bread. If it were pieces they would probably ingest it outside and I would never know.

Do you have a neighbor that could be throwing a slice of bread out in their yard for birds to eat. My 84 year old mother does that on her balcony. Sometimes bigger birds will carry it off and drop it elsewhere, perhaps where your dogs have access?

I throw the heels and dried out bread out to the birds.  I have seen the crows pick up pieces of it and fly off and drop it into my neighbor's yard.
