Boy, I wish we had an rt.com bat phone Of Course it is 4:30 pm just before a long weekend, on my way home from work & on an EXTREMELY busy rd, in a NOT SO GREAT part of town, ablock or so from the x-way (in downtown Louisville, KY) there is a poor little doggie scared, confused & at the middle of an incredibly busy intersection almost being hit, horns blaring from every angle...OMG he was so scared...ANYHOO more of that story later -right now- most pressing...OF COURSE I put him in my car & took him home my 2 (doggie)girls are great hostesses...but it's supposed to storm this week-end, no one was open by 6 or so pm (paper, humane society, etc.) I figure I'll keep him in one of the other dogs crates overnight...supervise the rest of time...they have their flea stuff on, but he is a stray, superskinny but has collar & flea collar...super sweet...already checked paper on line, nothing...what do I do????? I've taken dogs in before, but they always look okay, from good areas(I don't mean to sound snobby on this-Please don't take it that way ) I just don't know anything, don't want to get my babies sick, etc, house infested w/fleas, etc...I may be losing my job soon, not sure (guy that hired me left abruptly not sure of future) I know I am "panick-typing" but any insight would be greatly appreciated!!! Should I try to get in w/my vet if open on Saturday? Ally just had a HUGE vet bill, bvut isn't it better safe than sorry??????
ALL HELP INSIGHT GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!!!!!

First thanks for keeping the pup safe. Call teh police, animal control and let them know you have him. With any luck the owners will check and you will be able to send him home fast ABUT because of this poor condition I suspect he is either neglected or has been on the run a while. IF it is neglect he may have few if any shots and may carry worms or an something infectious. Has your crew had their parvo shots? That's a biggie. I'd probably limit their interactions, pick up his poops immediately, feed and water him separately and don't let them share food/bowls or toys to be safe. A lot depends on how healthy and resistant your own dogs are. As to fleas, can you give the dog a bathe tomorrow and today keep him on a HARD floor (crate too) not carpet? The main thing is give him a small amount of food and water at first and see how he tolerates it, and give him a little love if he will take it. He's probably very scared. |

My husband, Dean pulled multiple ticks off this dog & said he's "infested." & I saw several fleas...it could possibly storm right now...too late for getting flea stuff for a bath...he is so thin but gentle, grateful & loving... Dean wants me to leave him outside tonight...Arghhh!!!!!! He is tired, who knows, maybe sick. I don't know what the right thing is...I look at my 2 girls & how healthy & robust they are--would NOT want to put them in jeopardy...but I JUST CAN"T see that poor thing sleeping under our slight overhang of a roof or under our deck if it storms...maybe take one of their cages & put it downstairs, keep him in it until I can take him to vet or get direction... OH< WHAT TO DO< WHAT TO DO>>>

I just called a 24 hr vet...they recommended keeping him in the garage...SO w/a heavy heart I have decided what is best for ALL involved: I will take one of my dogs cages, put it in the garage (w/lots of fluffy towels) it won't be too hot, but at least he has shelter.."tomorrow is another day" (I'm thinkin' Katie Scarlett would appreciate that one ) I'll probably have to have him checked out & go from there...THANKS SO MUCH FOR RESPONDING!!!!!

My sister-in-law was a breeder and for dogs too young to use flea meds (Advantix, etc), she would use Dawn (or one of the basic green dish soaps) and the fleas would fall off. Worst case is you have to re-treat the dogs with Frontline/Advantix (be sure it's the one that does ticks too). Getting rid of fleas is so much easier and faster than it used to be. The joy of rescuing a dog last a lifetime.
This is so cool. I used to live in Missouri where we had to treat our dogs every 30 days. We have lived in Washington for a year and haven't had to do it yet. It's awesome. Good luck with the dog. I think you did a GREAT thing.

Hopefully I can find a place open today to check...Worst case scenerio I get him checked by a vet. contact humane society-paper is closed today. I'm worried he might be sick & vet bill astronomical, but at this point I don't really have a choice... |

Please do what you can for this little guy! On the same day you found him I had a very bad dy because of a very skinny stray. I stopped to get gas on the way to work, there was this momma dog (teats very full) yellow lab without puppies, and looked like had been for a while. She was a large lab but very very skinny, maybe 75#s. Someone had put water and dry food out. She came up to me I gave her a little love then had to leave, she followed me to my truck and wanted to get in, I couldn't take her, so I told her no she sat down, and LOOKED at me like "I understand". She haunted me all day. Bt noon I had decided to pick her up on my way home, despite my BF adamently telling no to the point of if she was at the house when he got home he would not stay.. oh well she needed help. After work I went by the store but she was laying in the street dead. She had been hit by a car. I brought her home a buried her. I still cry about it! And yes like you I would have brought her home and exposed my kids too her but what real choice is there. Thanks for doing what I couldn't that day. |

Noodles n ME Thanks so much for sharing!!! That is exactly why I don't have a choice. I know what you mean about feeling "haunted", it will all work itself out somehow. I actually don't mind at all he's a sweetheart, I'm just trying to do right by him, my other 2, my house, finances, etc. Humane society & Animal care is closed today. Tomorrow is another day. I just took him to Feeders Supply & bthed him w/tick/flea killer...I have NEVER seen ticks that big...that's all I can do. He will stay here. If no one claims him he WILL NOT be pts...we will manage & try to find him a good home. AM worried he might be sick, but will have to wait to tomorrow to get him checked...Thanks to all who are willing to read my frazzled ramblings...

Two dogs are all I ever got for me...well acually I din't go looking for Noodles but had to have when I saw her. The rest are can't keep because of allergies, don't want any more, found hurt or just waundering. And yes sometimes it gets expensive & stressful but I can't not help. Hope all goes well with you and yours and please keep us/me updated. hugs & kisses from mine to yours!!! |

Be careful, My son bought home a dog. I have 6 ratties, and babies. This dog was the sweetest, sweetest dog. Unfortunately, she brought with her parvo. I lost 2 puppies, that i nursed and cried for every day. I took the dog to the vet, and $300.00 later(not so bad to help a dog) found a home for her. It has been a few years, and I've delt with the parvo virus many more times. I've lost 1 more puppy and was at risk of loosing 1 more. It was very hard to go through. I had used bleach to clean. The vet had told me that sometimes that works, but it's a virus. Be careful. Your girls, being healthy and up to date on their shots, should do o.k. Good luck. Good deeds don't go unpunished. That is what makes me most torn...my girls are UTD on everything, so hopefully all will be ok...they are separated most of time, don't eat/drink out of same bowls, etc, but I am well aware it is still a risk |
