Subject: Guinness killed a bird!

I was working in the front yard for hours today. At some point I felt like I was gonna faint. So I wrapped it up and put everything away. I let the dogs out back. I hear a commotion from bluejays by my fence. Next thing, Guinness in tearing off to the side of the house, the alley type area with the ac unit. Cesar follows him. The first thing I'm always scared of is that he'll find a snake and have no fear. Then he pops around the corner with a bird in his mouth! He did listen to me when I yelled for him to drop it. Cesar checked it out but backed away when I yelled. At this point the poor thing was still opening and closing its mouth. I got the dogs inside the house and grabbed some shoes. But it wasn't moving anymore.... I felt so bad. I scooped it up with the pooperscooper and checked him out, he was young and I think Guinness hurt him badly when he took him in his mouth.... The poor thing had the misfortune to land inside my 6ft fence. His parents where so upset, shrieking... I'm sorta squeamish, so I just flung the body over the fence into the greenspace behind me... I feel so bad, Guinness is only a year old, and already he's a murderer................. For a 10lb little furball, he wants to kill everything, bugs, squirrels, cats, and poor little birdie. I'm scared he's gonna get hurt because he has no fear of anything. The pitbull, Cesar, approaches unknown creatures with serious caution. But the rat terrier just runs in for the kill!

He's only doing what insticnt is telling him...My sweet Julia has killed a bird, 2 bunnies and a prairie dog. These dogs make such good hunters!!!

Okay that cracked me up!! I picture this dead bird flying.........I usually just cover them with tupperware bowls til Guy gets home. We get a lot of dead birds, mostly from West Nile which is bad in our area right now. Hunting Terriers with squeamish mommies, I am in the same boat as you.

Our cute little doggies are predators; this breed was created to hunt small animals. The biologist in me keeps me from worrying about whether the birds, chipmunks, rabbits are upset - Darwin will have his way. Congratulations to Guiness, he has shown that his bloodline runs true and his instincts are honed. Give him a high five from me and Hendryx.

Actually all dogs are predators. Just that not all breeds are efficient ones. Our late bichon, Clyde, was actually chased by rabbits a couple of times. The one time he actually got something, it was a bird that had flown head first into the slider. Clyde went to sniff it, and the darn thing practically flopped into his mouth. Then he got the idea that he'd done something doggie right, so he pranced into the house to show us the birdie in his mouth. My wife shrieked and smacked him on the back of the head. Poor Clyde, his one chance to shine as a bird dog robbed from him.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

I've lost count of how many (baby) birds my ratties have killed...they just got another one the other day, and they keep going back to the same nest hoping another baby bird will fall out and land in their mouths.

Anyone had a squirrel brought to them yet?? Pixie only catches the occasional water bug or roach, but my grandparent's Chinese Shar Pei got a squirrel once. They let him in, and after about 5 minutes, they noticed him sort of prancing around and whining. Upon closer inspection, they discovered an entire squirrel that he had literally squirreled away in his giant jaws. The only evidence was a little bit of the tail hanging out of goofball's mouth and since it was the same color as his fur, they didn't see it right away. I'll never forget my grandfather shreiking, "Marilyn! This fool's got a squirrel! And he won't give it to me!!! I need your help!" And of course, just as she always is in time of crisis, she was in the bathtub...
