Wow folks! It really warmed my heart to see all these wonderful well wishes for Murphy! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!
Murphy is finally home and on the mend. His fever is gone, no vomiting or diarrhea and he's able to keep food down, albeit, it's some bland formula that the vet prescribed. He was diagnosed as having gastrointestinitis... it's a mystery as to what he actually got into, but whatever it was, it brought the boy to his knees. He's taking an antibiotic for a while - Metrnidazole.
Anyway, it's great to have him back home, with my wallet exactly $626.94 lighter, but hey... who's counting?
Murphy is sleeping right now, which is what I should also go do since I haven't been to bed since Tuesday. I was scared I was going to lose the little guy and am so relieved. I think I can sleep now.
Thank you all again. |

Mitch, What brand of food are you feeding Murphy? The reason I ask, I just got an alert that some folks feeding nutro brand foods are having problems with their pets. bloody Diarrhea, vomiting etc. When I read your post, I thougth of the email I got. No matter what, I'm glad he is on the mend and doing better. The bland food will be good for him till his insides settle down a bit. Hope you are getting some well earned rest! Doggy parenting can be very hard somedays!! |

All my dogs have had that including the "strawberry jelly" poop. It's a mystery as to why and how but antibiotics made all the difference. A relative that lives really close to me is a surgeon, the human kind, not animal type and he says we are so afraid of vomit and blood but that actually the body uses them to expel things that shouldn't be int he body. I guess that makes sense but it is scary!
Glad the boy is better. Keep him quiet ofr a few days if possible.

| Wow! This has been a scary post that seems to be ending on a positive note. I have also had dogs with "Garbage Gut Syndrome". Amos had a light case of it this past weekend. NO blood, but some of the most foul smelling diarrhea, I've ever seen. So glad that Murphy is on the mend. Amos sends "High Paws". |

Again folks, thank you SO MUCH for the great moral support. You are the best.
Murphy is holding his own, and has had some more of the Hills canned dog food the vet prescribed. He loves it! Getting him back on a dry formula may be a problem. He's sleeping right now. Been quite an adventure for him.
When he is well, I am going to take him for a car ride to the park or pet-smart or something fun for him. So far, car rides are not fun... it's to be boarded or to the vet, where they violate him in oh so many ways! The look on his face when thay take his temp is not something I will soon forget - "Hey. HEY!!! No going in the out door! Exit only! EXIT ONLY!!!" He needs to know car rides don't always mean incarseration or orafice violation.

| Glad he's on the mend! Gavin had this soon after getting here...not as bad though...his vet costs were only $98! Got the same meds though...just no stay at the vets. Vet told us that it was probably because he was in such bad shape from the shelter....I've always suspected that the raw egg I was feeding him (to gain weight since he was emaciated) gave him salmonella poisoning. (Yes, I know, this doesn't happen to healthy dogs but Gavin was in horrible shape and his system maybe just couldn't handle it.) |

Sorry Gavin and you went through this. The vet said he sees this pretty often. The biggest part of the costs for Murphy's care were from the after-hours animal hospital. It was $97 just to walk in, and then the meter starts running... charges for examination, $187 for the blood work, $47 for a catheter for the IV,$30 for this med, $30 for that med... and so on.
It wasn't a matter of money, really... I mean, I do blink when I see the cost of all this, but it's Murphy. I'm gonna pay it.

I'm just reading this, but I'm glad Murphy is OK! Pixie got some Wendy's fries out of the trash not long after she found us and she threw up twice that night and had pretty bad regular diarrhea (no blood, though). My grandmother's Shar Pei had bloody poop once and it was caused by a bacterial infection in his intestines. A few days of antibiotics did the trick. |
