So we had workmen at the lakehouse today - needed work on the water treatment stuff in the basment. At one point they had to wrestle a new treatment tank through the front door. Hendryx decides that this is a great opportunity to dash between their legs, run outside unleashed and chase the day camp school bus. He races to the corner and barks at a little girl getting off, then he starts doing the rattie 500 around the bus. I ran out, realized that yelling at him would only make the situation worse, ran back to the house and grabbed his leash. He does respond to the leash - he trotted right over and waited for me to leash him. No use screaming at him, the incident had passed. All I could do is praise him for responding to the leash. My emotions were telling me that I would have been much happier to smack him so hard that he flew over the bus. So much for emotions.

I'll write up the good news in another post.

His name is Hendryx! He's a rat terrier! OK!

How scary! Has your heart slowed down yet? Good for you for keeping your head and knowing what would work to get Hendryx to come to you!

So glad he's ok and smart thinking with the leash, Dan! You are all scared and worked up, meanwhile Hendryx thinks he had quite the lark!

you handled that well, i would have reacted the opposite way and made a muck of everything. Hendryx probably thought he just had the time of his life while he gave you the scare of yours.

He tried it again today! The water purifier guy shows up and Hendryx is waiting at the door. He figured that he'd make a break for it as soon as it opens. So I leashed him. I think he was pissed off, but he's so trained to the leash by now that he just waited until it was clipped on.

Wow, that is scary! Great job keeping your head on your shoulders like that. That's hard to do when they slip away like that!

Keeping calm is hard in these situations... pretty sure my blood pressure is up since we have gotten Murphy.  Guess I'll find out at my next physical.

Awesome that you've got him well trained to come and let you leash him, though.
