My mom is very hard of hearing and has been wearing hearing aids for a few years.  Now she's developing a cataract on her left eye.  She was griping today about going deaf and blind and I tried to reassure her by saying at least she had three senses left.  Then we had trouble remember what all three senses were left.   We remembered taste and touch, but couldn't remember what the last sense was.  I guess my mom and I are also developing dementia.

Well, Pam, be glad she will at least WEAR the hearing aids! LOL My MIL has them but jerks them out of her ears as fast as you can put them in! (The nursing home rep told us many of the residents do that). So for the last 20 years we have had to get right up by my MIL and shout everything we want to say to her! God that gets old (no pun intended LOL). And about the cataracts, I used to work for a group of 5 ophthalmologists in Galveston many years ago and they did cataract removal on patients in their 90's! So don't rule out that option just because your Mom is old. If she's strong enough for surgery at all, those IOL (intraocular lens) placements after cataract removal are pretty easy/common surgery nowadays.

It took forever to convince my mom to get hearing aids! She wears them all the time, except when she's at home. You can hear her TV from the driveway!

With her hearing aids not working correctly right now, you have to stand on her left side, facing her so she can read your lips, and shout at her. I had to tell all the doctors and nurses that yesterday.

We recently finally convinced her to get a walker and use it. As far as the cataract surgery goes, she wants to get that done now, but Medicare makes you wait until it is a certain size or thickness before they will pay.
