I went home at lunch and the door is in. So my mom stood on one side and I on the other. They would push with their paw but not go through unless we held it up!! It has 3 magnets on the bottom to hold it in place but that they can easily push open. Alice would push with her paw and watch it go back into place. She didn't stick her head through. Fred (if you had treats) would somewhat come through once you opened a crack for him. Even with treats unless we opened it they would not push through.......so how do I teach them it's okay to push the flap?? |

| Throw a ball or a toy through to the other side, making it push the flap open? |

Try to hold open the flap so the dog can see you and try to coax them through the opening. You may need to put a leash on them. Once they come in and out try it with the flap down and again maybe you will need a leash. Praise the hell out of them if it works. It took me 5 minutes to teach Bandit but, Smokey was skittish and took longer. Once they are not fearful all will be good. |

Hey Bill, when I hold the flap open they come in and out like champs. When its down they will not come through. Now Alice will take her paw and push it but then it shuts and she keeps doing it. They need to use their head to push through. If you give Fred a little opening he will push through with his head (for a treat) no opening he just stands there, even if I call him. Not sure where to go from here??
They will learn this door, right?? |

Just a question here..............how high is the bottom of the opening from the ground? Can they just step in or do they have to jump a little? Bandit is big so he just walks through. Smokey has to sort of hop through. Now he goes through in a snap with no hesitation. |

I just got home and saw your post....my older dog Licorice was kind of afraid of the magnets....of course, this was an unfamiliar noise to her....so she too was real leary to go through..... The first few days I would only let them out and come in through the doggie door....even if it meant I had to hold up the flap.....this helped Licorice immensely. Now she is used to the feeling of the magnets letting loose and the flap swining once she comes through. It will happen, just be diligent and only let them use the dog door now and before you know it they will be running right through it! They love the freedom.... Lynn |

| Me, too....I promise it will come. We bought the door for Bailey because she had potty issues. Since installing the door she has done amazingly well. Once in a while accidents (she will NOT go out in the rain. No way!). The funniest thing is our little 3.5 TFT started coming in from outside this past Saturday. The door is taller than she is but she balances herself on the rim and comes through. Keep in mind that she has a totally useless crippled front leg. She learned this all by herself after watching Bailey go in and out. She hasn't mastered going out but I feel she will someday. So see, they will learn. |

I have never used a doggie door so I have no advice, I just wanted to ask for an update and wish you luck! I hope to get one installed for the balcony...they LOVE it out there! I am getting advice for that now! hehe |
