| I am having horrible lower back pain ....I have been running which I have not ever done before so I am hoping it is just because of that but I was also hearing last night that kidney stones cause lower back pain.....what other symptoms are there of kidney stones....I really cannot afford any health problems right now....so say a prayer that as I run more it will get better and its not anything more than that.... |

| Angie, I dont know a thing about kidney stones, but if you just started running, do you stretch your muscles before AND after a run? And you need to do a slower paced "cool down" the last part of your run, too. If not, that could be the cause of sore muscles, lower back and legs, too. |

| I stretch before but forget to after cuz i am to busy deciding if I am having a heart attack...lol I might try that and see if it helps....I am sure its just my body getting used to the running but man it hurts!!!! |

Angie, Does the low back pain radiate down the back of one or both of your legs?(nerve compression) Or into your groin area?(kidney stone). Is the pain only after you run?(compression) or intermittant colicky come and go pain?(kidney stone). Do you have accompanied nausea?(kidney stone). If you've just started running, the jarring may be messing with the discs in your low back. My bones are not in good shape even though I'm not that old(43). I would no more take up running than I would start jumping out of airplanes. I know my limitations. For me, the better exercise is walking and stretching(like yoga, which I don't do, but really NEED to). Depending on your age, you may want to have your back checked before you do much a whole lot of aggressive excercise. JMO. |

| Also Angie, if it was kidney stones it would more than likely be one sided, sharp pain of to the side of your spine, just above your lower back. It could be out of shape, could be discs. Does it go away with rest or position change? I would just monitor it, take some ibuprofin and if it keeps up, let your doc know just in case. |

| it does not really radiate anywhere it just is in my lower back......I am gonna give it a couple more times and if the pain is still there I will go to the doctor and see what they suggest....I really love running and I hope I dont have to give it up... |

| being a victim of kidney stones 5 times over, i can tell you exactly what they feel like. you'll have pain on one side of your lower back, more towards your side than the middle of your back. the only time you'd have it on both sides if you were unfortunate enough to have a stone in each kidney which i think is rare. But the pain is a constant pain and is unforgiving until the stone passes. You feel like you gotta go to the bathroom constantly and when you try to go nothing comes out. I compare it to labor pains but worse haha. Sorry to be so detailed, just thought it might be helpful to describe a kidney stone, trust me, you'll know. You still should get it checked out though even if it's just back pain because like the other people said, it could be something with your disc which isn't good either :-) Hope this helps |

think of it this way, your back muscles have to work much harder to keep you upright as you run than when you walk. Your back is suddenly working alot harder than it has been. I hate to say it, but the best thing to do is build up your core muscles some- either stomach crunches or other core building exercises. You could also try icing your back for 20 minutes after you finish your run.
Running shoes, you have a new pair or are you using a beat up old pair of sneaks?

Yeah probably not stones...it is not really one side and its not pain like that so probably just a sore back from running....I did not run last night and it feels a little better today....we will see....Thanks for the info it helps alot!!! |

I hurt my back this last week-end doing some planting, yikkes, not even running for my life. Maybe I should be stretching just to plant some flowers, man I feel old! Angie, no advise, but advil sure does the trick for me. |

glad it's easing up today! Probably just muscle pain. Icy Hot and an ice pack will do wonders. You sit at work? try a little pillow or rolled up towel at the small of your back. |

Well when I was walking yesterday up and down that long path, I actually thought about you and proud I was that you were running around that track...I ALMOST followed your lead and TRIED to run a little on the path...now I may have to rethink that!! LOL!!! I hope your back feels better soon. If you are looking for good core building excercises...get 10 minute pilates...it is HE@* but it works!! |
